CHAPTER ONE
ALLISON
My mind is racing so fast it’s not even funny, but for some reason I’m still unable to find the words to get me out of this mess. I’ve been caught creeping downstairs the morning after sleeping with Jake. I’m as guilty as if Riley’s nanny-slash-housekeeper found me with my hand deep into the cookie jar and the fear consuming me has robbed me of my ability to speak.
I mean, how do I explain why the hell I’m standing in the middle of Jake’s house at the crack of dawn attempting to sneak out like a thief? It’s not as if I can confess to her that after a night of unbridled sex, I just left the comfort of Jake’s warm body because I was freaked he might think last night was a mistake when he rolls over and sees my imperfect naked body lying there? Once he’s sobered up, maybe he might not think I’m all that attractive. How do I divulge to this woman looking at me for answers that last night I came so many times I thought I was going to lose my mind? There’s no way I can put into words how my desperate need for attention and affection turned me into a sex-craved kitten willing to submit myself to Jake’s naughty desires. It’s impossible.
In less than twenty-four hours since arriving in Colorado I’ve flirted with my boss’ super-sexy older brother, accepted the advances of his hunky and equally delicious business partner and allowed myself to do unmentionable and downright dirty things with the most gorgeous man I’ve ever known. Holy shit. I’ve been so uncharacteristically bold, I barely recognize myself and now I’m paying the price for my newfound sassiness.
“Allison. Is everything okay?” Isadora presses me and I blurt out the first thing that pops into my mind to save my ass.
“I thought I left my iPhone in the upstairs bathroom,” I say, pointing to the ceiling above me. We both follow my pointed finger before locking eyes again. I’m in so much trouble right now.
“Oh,” she responds carefully. It’s as if she’s trying to assess if she should trust my lie or not.
“I fell asleep on Jake’s sofa last night after dinner and I guess he didn’t want to wake me up.” The words come out choked since the fear of being caught is pressing against my vocal cords. “I wanted to call my best friend before she left for work to let her know I had safely arrived, but I realized my phone wasn’t in my crossbody bag so I thought it was in the bathroom.” As embarrassed as I am for lying, I don’t see any other way out. Riley would freak out if she found out I spent last night in the arms of the most formidable lover I’ve ever had—her brother. There’s no way for me to tell the truth and hold on to my dignity, let alone this job.
God, did she buy it? Isadora is still looking at me suspiciously.
Granted, it’s the crack of dawn and it’s quiet as can be, but the heavy silence in the room as Isadora takes me in is overpowering. I try my best to hold her inquisitive gaze, but I’ve never been bold enough to maintain eye contact with someone for this long. I ready myself to plead my case when she speaks again.
“I can’t understand your generation. My kids are the same way. They can’t live without that stupid phone glued to their hands. The scary thing is this phenomenon is hitting even the young ones. My grandkids are already addicted to that thing.” Her genuine smile melts some of my fears away.
Relief washes over me like a spring shower when she laughs and I let my tense shoulders fall. I take another tentative step down the stairs to join her in the kitchen, but her next question stops me in my tracks. “Did you find it?”
Okay, I guess she won’t back down.
“Oh, you mean my phone?”
“Of course, child.”
“No. It wasn’t upstairs and it’s not in my handbag. I’m sure I’m a bit all over the place since I just arrived and I might have forgotten it in my other bag in my bedroom.”
“You better find it quick because knowing kids your age, you’ll die if you don’t.” She laughs again and I allow myself to join her.
“My life is in that phone.”
“So I’ve been told many times by my own offspring. I still have a simple flip phone. I know it’s old-fashioned, but I hate these miniature things that run on swoops and swipes and taps on buttons that aren’t really there.”
“I totally get it, but once you start using them, you can’t go without.” I’m so thankful the mood in the room has shifted.
Get out while you’re ahead.
“Why don’t I go back to my house and see if I can locate it,” I say in an attempt to escape this uncomfortable situation.
“I can’t believe you’re up so early. I mean the roosters are barely up.” She chuckles. “You must be struggling because of the jetlag. No wonder you can’t remember where you put your phone.”
This is certainly not my ideal way to get introduced to Isadora. “There’s a two-hour time difference with New York and the city must be already bustling.”
“It’s a quarter past five here,” she says, looking at the big silver-framed clock on the wall. “I’m sure some New Yorkers already have a full day’s work under their belts. Everything moves so fast out there.”
“You’re right. It would already be seven-fifteen in the morning and I’m usually up and about by this time along with ninety percent of the city.”
“If you can make it there…”
“Exactly. It’s always go, go, go in the Big Apple.”
“I couldn’t survive more than a day. I love the peace and quiet I can enjoy out here.”
“I’ve only just arrived, but I can understand why you’d prefer living here.” The tense conversation has turned into a pleasant one and I can see why Riley is so fond of this tiny woman.
“I wanted it to be a surprise, but since you’re standing here, you might as well
know I’m preparing a special breakfast this morning to welcome you. Miss Riley won’t be up for a while and then she’ll be busy for a little while with her rambunctious kids since it’s summer vacation and school is out. I’ll go over there in a few hours to help out, but I thought a hearty breakfast would be a good thing to ease into your first day on the ranch.”
I’m touched and her kindness makes me feel guilty for lying to her. “I didn’t expect this much. You’re so sweet.”
“I prepared a few things last night before I left, so if you run back to your house and get ready, I’ll treat you to my signature breakfast.”
“This sounds amazing.”
“You don’t even know what I’ll be serving,” she teases.
“You’re right, but something tells me I’ll have seconds.”
“Oh, I can guarantee that much, child. No one can resist Isadora’s home cooking. The folks out here think they know food, but I’m from the South, where we take food real seriously. Now, go on,” she says, waving me towards the door. “Breakfast will be ready in thirty minutes. You better get yourself back to your house, take a quick shower and rush back over here. Trust me, you don’t want to be late because I don’t know how long I can hold off Mr. Hunter and Mr. Jake from devouring the feast I’ll prepare in your honor.”
“Even though Riley’s dinner was insanely delicious, I’m starved.”
“Good. I’m glad to hear it. What I’d give to be your age again. You burn off calories just by sleeping. God knows, my appetite isn’t what it used to be.”
The fact that I’m so famished has little to do with a goodnight’s sleep and everything to do with the fact that Jake made me come so many times last night, I have nothing left this morning.
“I’ll grab my bag in the living room and I’ll be on my way.” I rush to grab my crossbody bag. I slip back into my shoes and I turn on my heel.
“I’ll see you soon, and make sure to bring your appetite.” Isadora winks at me as I head towards the door.
“Don’t worry, I will.” I wink back.
I wave goodbye to Riley’s nanny-slash-housekeeper, who has already started pulling out pans from cupboards on my way out. I only allow myself to breathe once I shut the door behind me.
That was way too close for comfort. Thank God it’s over.
My short-lived relief turns into worry once I realize I’ll have to confront Jake at breakfast in front of Hunter and Isadora.
Crap. What have I gotten myself into?
“Maybe I shouldn’t have left without so much as a goodbye,” I tell myself aloud as I walk away from Jake’s house.
I surely would hate it if he thought last night wasn’t amazing, but from my experience, the morning after changes a lot of things when a man sees you in broad daylight with all your flaws exposed.
CHAPTER TWO
JAKE
I’m fast asleep when voices from downstairs wake me up. A part of me knows full well I have to get up and get started with my day, but the horny man in me just wants to stay in bed and fuck until lunch. Two months of jerking off don’t come close to fucking a sensual woman.
I reach out to caress the suppleness of her body, but as far as I can reach, I’m unable to touch her. I peer open my eyes, but to my surprise my bed is empty. Where is she?
I sit up, rub my eyes and look around the room for traces of the woman I devoured with such satisfaction last night. Her clothes are gone. Intrigued by the commotion below, I flip back the sheets and jump out of bed to grab a robe to cover my nakedness. I open the door to my bedroom as carefully as I can to avoid raising any attention and I tiptoe to the hallway all the way to the top of the stairs. I angle my body to remain hidden while listening in on the conversation.
I can’t make out the words because they’ve lowered their voices to a near whisper, but I do hear the warm laughter of my housekeeper and I also detect Allison’s sweet voice. Was she trying to sneak out? Did Isadora accidentally walk in as Allison was leaving? I lean in to hear better, but as I do, Ali leaves my house without so much as a goodbye.
What the fuck? Did I push her too far last night? I know I should have exerted some restraint, but how was that even a consideration when Allison’s body left me weak in the knees? I pounded her so hard last night after going without for so many months. I didn’t think she’d be able to sustain three rounds, but to my pleasure and hers, she managed fine. I swear, she screamed so loud, I thought for sure Hunter would come running to save her. She made me come so hard it was as if all the blood in my body hit my brain all at once as I released myself between her thighs.
Yeah, things moved fast last night, but there was no denying the raw attraction we shared. She wanted me as much as I wanted her.
After pacing my room for a few minutes, I decide I’m not going to get any answers standing here and I might as well jump into the shower to start my day. I know the household can be a bit loony at times with Riley’s young kids, Isadora’s effervescence, Hunter’s presence and everything else that goes on around here, but I’ll have to corner Allison before I leave for the city to get an explanation from her. She’s the first woman to share my bed since I moved out here.
Hunter and I made a pact. We didn’t want to parade different women in front of my nephews, so we usually end up spending the night at a woman’s home or the hotel where she’s staying. I didn’t even invite Lindsay over while we were dating. But there’s something about Allison that made it so natural for me to take her up here.
I want more of her. Heck, I want her in my bed right now. I would have loved to wake up with her sexy body wrapped around me and there’s no way I would have started this day without fucking her again just to hear her squeal and beg for me to make her come like she did last night. But I’m not going to force her hand. She has to want this as much I do.
* * *
When I open the door to my bathroom, I’m greeted with the aroma of bacon. The sweet smell has seeped under the gap below my door, tantalizing my nostrils and tempting my tummy. I’m so starved I could eat a whole cow this morning. Isadora must have prepared one of her famous Southern breakfasts to greet the newcomer. I jump into my work clothes and sprint down the stairs, skipping every other step, to my kitchen.
“Well, good morning, Mr. Jake.”
“Good morning to you, Isadora. Even when you cook up a storm, you manage to keep this place spotless… unlike someone we both know.” As I look around, I marvel at how she was able to tidy up my kitchen after Riley left such a mess last night. We’d all be lost without this woman.
“When your sister cooks, you’d think the house got hit by a tornado.” The beautiful black woman rewards me with a complicit smile.
“You got that right. I honestly don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“Ain’t that the truth?” She grins at me before winking mischievously.
Isadora Bennett has been part of this family for four years now and without her, we wouldn’t be able to tell our right foot from our left. I remember how I bumped into her—not that she’d ever allow me to forget it.
Riley had just moved in with three active boys and a tiny little baby girl and she was desperate to get her life back in order. She’d gotten married young when she found out she was expecting at the tender age of sixteen. Unfortunately, her scumbag of a husband walked out on her, stating he was too young for this domesticated life and he had stopped loving her and the kids. Single, penniless and humiliated, she had been heartbroken for months after she’d arrived, but eventually she found the strength to rebuild herself and her life.
One afternoon, she left me with my nephews and my niece to go to an interview to find a job to feed her kids. No matter how many times I reminded her I had enough money to last us five lifetimes, my stubborn sister refused to rely on me. I’ve known her since she was in our mom’s tummy and I’d die before leaving her to fend for herself. Since Riley’s marriage started unraveling when she was three months pregnant with Erika, we spent a long
stretch of time without seeing each other because she was consumed with damage control. She devoted herself heart and soul to saving her marriage, but to no avail.
By the time she moved in, I was rusty in my role as uncle and I was doing a shit job disciplining the boys. I was at Albertsons grabbing some food and pleading with Zack and the twins, Brady and Perry, to behave when this woman with a beautiful ebony complexion approached me. After telling me I was doing a poor job at letting the boys know who was in charge, she went on to explain she had dedicated her life to being a nanny to help parents who couldn’t handle it all on their own.
I was no fool—I knew I was in way over my head. After hearing of her credentials, I summoned her to the ranch that same afternoon to meet my sister. After a series of grueling interviews and thorough background checks, we hired her. The fact she keeps my house and the rest of the ranch as clean as she does is an added bonus. I couldn’t ask for more.
“Speaking about the truth, you know I’m not one to hold my tongue.”
“No, you’re not. What’s troubling you this morning?”
“You look as tired as Miss Allison does.”
“I do?” I ask carefully, worried I might tip Isadora off.
“Yeah. I came in early to get everything ready for the surprise I had in store for her, but she’s the one who surprised me when I saw her crawling down from upstairs.” Isadora waves her finger in front of her.
“Really?” I don’t want to add more than I have to because I don’t know how much Isadora knows. I haven’t got a clue what the two women discussed before Allison ran out. “What was she doing upstairs?”
“Apparently she fell asleep on your couch and you, being the perfect gentleman you are, allowed her to rest for the night. Poor thing, she must have been exhausted with this new adventure. This morning she wanted to call her friend in New York and thought she had left her phone in the bathroom upstairs.”
