  * There is still considerable dispute over the total number of hits accumulated by Wahoo Sam. Some insist that the correct total should be 3,051. The case for the latter figure was best stated by H. G. Salsinger (in the Detroit News of May 20, 1957) upon the occasion of Sam Crawford’s induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame:

“According to the official records, Crawford is credited with a lifetime total of 2,964 hits, but he should rightfully be credited with 3,051. When Crawford began his career, records were kept in a careless and haphazard manner. Crawford made his professional debut with Chatham in the Canadian League in 1899, but after 43 games he advanced to Grand Rapids in the Western League, where he made 87 hits and batted .334.

“Ban Johnson was president of the Western League in 1899. At the same time he was organizing the American League, which he launched in the spring of 1900. The National Commission ruled that any player from the Western League entering either the old National League or the new American League would be credited with all hits he made in the Western League.

“Crawford joined Cincinnati and was therefore entitled to the 87 hits he made for Grand Rapids. In compiling his lifetime record the statistician overlooked these 87 hits and gave him credit for 2,964 instead of his rightful 3,051.”0

  * Since this book was originally published, in 1966, both the Perry brothers (Gaylord and Jim) and the Niekro brothers (Phil and Joe) have outdistanced the Coveleski brothers in number of games won.
