  Chapter 43

Daith sat in the observatory, staring straight up, out of the ship into the diamond-studded blackness of space. She thought about how much had been stolen from her. Her family murdered, her memories taken, even her chance at finding out about her past with Dru’s help—before he was…

Daith shuddered, the motion rippling through her whole body. Tears caused blurring of the white dots of light above her. She rubbed her hands against each other, aware she’d never feel his energy flow into hers again.

I never even got the chance to see what could have been between us. To ever know if what I felt might have gone on to be something else, something more.

Daith wiped away the moisture from her cheeks, but her movements couldn’t keep up with the flow of pain falling from her eyes. To have been so close to something real, something true, and have the possibility snatched away in a single moment.

  Gone forever.

Daith’s hands became fists and she struck away the tears. It wasn’t fair. They took from her the one individual who could have helped her get her life back, shown her about her amazing gifts, and helped her to use them.

  And they killed him.

Anger welled up. The heat turned to flame inside her. Her power fed on her rage, building in intensity until she couldn’t hold back any longer.

A blood-curdling scream issued forth from her lips, her jaw slack, her neck tendons bulging. She screamed her pain, her fear, her loneliness toward the clear ceiling. Energy rushed out of her, filling the room, straining against the walls.

The ceiling burst outward toward the cosmos.

Air rushed all around her. She couldn’t breathe. She couldn’t see. The vacuum of space opened to her—no boundaries between herself and the void.

Instinct took over. Instinct to survive. She molded the fiery energy around her, like a cocoon of protection. Furniture knocked against her shield. Vacuum sucked against her body. But she was safe.

Alarms howled. Emergency force fields went up in place of the missing ceiling. Oxygen filled the room. She brought down her protective coating and gasped for breath.

She hadn’t moved. She should have been blown straight into space, but she hadn’t moved. She’d willed herself to stay.

Daith sat in silence for a few moments. The alarms had ceased. She’d fought against the force of the universe itself—and she’d won.

Who she used to be didn’t matter. She had this moment, now, to decide what to do. Her future didn’t lie with a dead family, a lost home, and a broken heart. All that mattered were her abilities and what she could do with them.

Trey entered the observatory, followed by Cenjo and a few other soldiers to see what had happened, to survey the scene. They came to a dead halt at her sitting in the middle of the empty room, completely fine.

“Don’t worry, Trey,” she said through a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “The Controllers are going to pay.”
