  Victor looked over at the man. “You took it?”

  “We did.”

  “Then I’ll go to my grave knowing Walter is getting his own finally.”

  “I thought you liked working for the man?” Yuri asked.

  Victor shrugged. “I did. It wasn’t so bad really. He let me do my own thing and I enjoyed the money, the women and the booze. I had a good run but even that gets old after a while. I knew going into this, I probably wouldn’t live to retirement and I’ve had a good run. But now that’s over and I’m not sorry. I only have one request.”

  “And that would be?”

  “That you kill me quick. This way its over quick and clean. My life has been nothing remarkable. But there is nothing I regret.”

  Sergi lifted his head and nodded at Kosta. The other man took his gun out and without warning shot Victor in the back of the head. Blood and small bits of skull and brain matter showered the other four men. Larry and Jason screamed while Jack pissed himself. Billy Jo realized in that moment these men meant to kill him. He also realized that even though he shared the same blood as Walter Franks, he would never get his due from the man.

  Jaden watched with deadened eyes as Victor met his end. This is what she knew Iosif meant before when he told her these men would find out what crossing the Bratva meant.

  She turned her head and met Sergi’s eyes head on. There was no remorse in them at all. She lifted her head a notch or two and nodded at the other man. She then turned and began walking toward the doorway.

  Iosif was a step behind her.

  Before she got two steps, Billy Jo called out her name, “Jaden.”

  She stopped and turned to him.

  Billy Jo begged her by asking her, “Mercy.”

  She felt tears run down her cheeks as she gave him a sad smile. “Would you have shown me any? Did you ever show me any mercy when I begged you to stop hurting me? I ran over and over again, and you never stopped hunting me down. I think you deserve everything they do to you and your friends. You tormented and tortured me for years. I don’t feel anything and if I did have some feeling about you, mercy wouldn’t be it.” Then she turned and walked through the door.

  Only when Iosif closed it behind them both did Jaden break down and sob in his arms.

  Walter Franks was just shutting down his computer when the door to his office was thrown open and his wife stormed in. He sat back and glared at the woman who had made his life a living hell for thirty years.

  “What the bloody hell have you done this time, husband?” she screamed at him.

  Walter frowned at her. “I have no idea what you are talking about.”

  “Oh, really?” Helene scoffed. “Where is all our money?”

  “In the bank where it belongs,” he stated with confusion.

  “Wrong! Its all gone. Transferred out this afternoon.” She stomped her way over to his desk. Leaning over the wooden barrio between them she snarled, “I told you before we married I would not tolerate you messing around on me or leaving me for another woman.”

  “What the hell are you talking about?” Walter blustered. “I’m not doing either of those things.”

  “Then why did you drain our accounts?”

  “I didn’t touch those accounts!” Walter shouted at her.

  “Then who did?” she demanded.

  Before he could answer, they both heard several pair of footsteps running toward his office. Walter couldn’t even get to his feet before several people pushed their way inside and held them both at gunpoint. The fact the men wore blue uniforms didn’t seem to make a difference. Not then anyway. Walter had several of the police force on his payroll but looking at the men around him he was sure none of these men were taking his bribes. In fact, he knew they weren’t.

  One man made his way through the sea of blue uniforms and stopped just the other side of Walter’s desk. Walter’s throat went dry when he saw who it was. Murray Dean, the one man who had waited years to catch him doing something wrong. The one man who he couldn’t bribe or intimidate.

  “What the hell do you want?” Walter bluffed his way through.

  “We have you this time Franks,” Murray told him. “This time, you can’t beat the rap or bribe your way out of jail. You are going to stand up and take the rap for all your evil ways.”

  Walter glared at him. “And what am I being charged with this time?”

  “First degree murder.” Murray glared at him.

  “Who am I supposed to have killed now?”

  “Senator Seth Cummings and Jazzy Gibbons.”

  Walter frowned. He hadn’t thought about those two in years. “What makes you think I killed them?”

  “Your daughter Jaden turned over the evidence we need to tie you to the crime.”

  Walter felt the blood freeze in his veins.

  Helene screamed in fury, “Your daughter? You have a daughter? You lousy bastard.”

  “But she’s dead too. I killed her when I killed her mother,” Walter whispered in shock.

  “She survived the attack,” Murray assured him. “Not only that but Jazzy wrote everything down for us in the hope that one day we would find it and be able to charge you for her murder. You are going to jail for the rest of your ungodly life.”

  “What am I being arrested for?” Helene screamed out.

  “Drugs distribution and money laundering, not to mention smuggling and a host of other charges,” Murray told her with a little glee in his tone. “I have so wanted to do this for so long…” He gazed at the pair of them. “Walter Franks and Helene Vogalan Franks, you are under arrest. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say, can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to have an attorney. If you cannot afford one, one will be appointed to you by the court. With these rights in mind, are you still willing to talk with me about the charges against you?”

  The couple glared at him.

  He grinned. “I thought not. Now it’s time to pay the piper, you monsters.”

  He watched as they were both handcuffed and led away from Franks’ office. He turned and followed the procession down the hall and out to the squad cars that would take Walter and Helene Vogalan Franks to jail.

  CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

  Jaden watched over the city, again standing beside the windows of the penthouse apartment she was staying in with Iosif. So much had happened in the last week and she was still not sure what it all meant.

  Iosif came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her.

  Jaden sighed and leaned back against him. “So what’s next?” she asked him.

  “Next?”

  “Mmm, what’s next on the agenda?”

  “What do you want to be next up, Mylash?”

  She smiled and turned to face him. “Well, you could take me into the bedroom and make wild and passionate love to me.”

  Iosif smiled. “I could if that was what you wanted.” He cocked his head at looked at her for a moment, “But I don’t think that’s what you really want, at least not right now. Is it?”

  She lifted her eyes to his. “I do want that, believe me I do but I think we need to talk about what our future holds first.”

  “Me too,” he agreed. “I need to know what you want? And please be honest with me.”

  “What do I want?” She licked her lips and really felt stunned for a moment. “You know something? I don’t think anyone has ever asked me that before.”

  “Then let me be the first.” He nodded. “What do you really want Babe?”

  She caught and held his gaze, then told him without any fanfare at all, “I want you. I meant what I said earlier about loving you. I love you with all my heart and soul. I want a life with you and I want babies with you. You brought me more happiness in the last week than I ever had growing up. I want you for you. I may never have any material things in life, they don’t mean all that much to me anyway, but I do want you.”

  Iosif smiled. “Good because you have me. I cla
imed you and I’ll never let you go. I love you too by the way. Those babies you want will share my name as will you I hope. You will be Mrs. Vlad Salazar.”

  “But I thought your name was Iosif Maxim?”

  “My mother never married my father and when I was born she gave me her last name, the same one I share with Roman. Does that make a difference to you?”

  Jaden smiled. “Not at all. Vlad huh? Well, that’s different from Iosif but I could get used to it.” She chewed her lower lip for a moment then asked, “Will we be staying here or going back to Kazakhstan with your father?”

  “We’re staying here. In New Orleans. I will still work for the Bratva, that is a lifelong commitment. But we will live here and build our own life together.”

  “That sounds so good. I can’t wait.” She leaned forward and began pressing tiny kisses along his jaw. “Can we start working on the family part right away?”

  “I think I can handle that, lyubov moya.” He growled and lifted her right off her feet.

  Jaden giggled and asked, “What does that mean? What you just said?”

  Marching down the hall, he entered their room then slammed the door shut behind him. “It means My Love.”

  Her eyes twinkled. “Okay… that is my favorite Russian phrase so far.”

  “I will teach you more than just Russian speak. We Russians are also know for hot loving, you know?”

  She laughed as she became breathless and nodded her head emphatically. “Da, da!”

  He paused and then tilted his head back and laughed hardily.

  Jaden shivered. “Oooh, more sunshine. I cannot get enough.”

  He kissed her fiercely, then threw her down on the bed and followed her body to the mattress. He pressed his mouth down over hers and the kiss they shared shut out the rest of the world.

  Moments later, they were both naked and he surged into her willing body. His hard hot cock met her wet core and they moved together in sweet unison. All there that could be heard was moans and groans with sighs of pleasure.

  Jaden groaned as he pressed into her harder and harder with each thrust. Iosif or Vlad as he called himself now couldn’t get enough of her. Each stroke sent them both higher and higher until finally they both exploded into a shower of ecstasy neither of them had reached before.

  It took them both several minutes to get their hearts to slow down enough to move and as Vlad moved off to her side.

  Jaden grabbed him as if she wouldn’t let him get too far away. The room finally stopped spinning and she laid her head on his chest, seeking out his heartbeat.

  She smiled at an errant thought she had. When she told him, she wanted his children she hadn’t really thought it was possible until this moment. For some reason, she thought the two of them had just become three. She couldn’t be sure of that for a while but she knew she was going to have his baby someday. A baby she had wanted most of her life. A baby with a man she would love for the rest of her life. She hoped he would have Isoif’s-Vlad’s blue eyes and his silky blond hair.

  Vlad smiled when he heard her whisper, “I love you…” His smile grew when he heard her whisper, “…Daddy.”

  Before he could answer her, she slipped away into the waiting arms of sleep. He smiled again and joined her.

  Tomorrow was another day, the first day of the rest of his life. A real life. He would tell her then his other news.

I often use people I watch as characters in my books and I always try to give my characters some of my own values and habits.

  I love to create characters and put them in a troubling situation then sit back and let them do all the work. My characters surprise even me at times. At some point in the book, they take on a life of their own and the twists and turns they create becomes the story. Of all the stories, I could write I found I like mystery/thrillers the best. I like to keep my readers guessing until the very end of the book.
