‘Wonderful! The children will be thrilled too.’

‘Won’t they just? I shall really feel as though I’m coming home when we move back to Tug Lane,’ she said.

  ‘I know.’

‘What perfect timing!’ Jane enthused. ‘My old cottage coming on to the market. It’s a sign of good things for the future.’

‘It’ll be good anyway, we don’t need signs to tell us that.’ Giles smiled at her meaningfully. ‘But in the meantime, don’t you and I have some unfinished business?’

  ‘We certainly do.’

They were halfway upstairs when someone called from the back door.

‘Cooee, dears,’ came Trudy’s dulcet tones. ‘It’s only us. Joe and me.’

Cursing good-humouredly at their thwarted plans, Jane and Giles went downstairs to greet the visitors.

‘Our tea dance finished earlier than we expected so we thought we’d call in to keep you company,’ explained Trudy.

‘We know the children have all gone out,’ added Joe, smiling.

‘And we thought you might be feeling a bit lonely,’ Trudy finished for him.

‘It’s very kind of you both,’ said Jane, struggling to keep a straight face. ‘Isn’t it, Giles.’

‘Very,’ he said with a dutiful smile.

Escaping to the kitchen to make some tea, they were both helpless with laughter.

‘There’ll be other times,’ promised Jane.

  ‘There’d better be!’

‘The rest of our lives, in fact.’

‘If we’re ever left alone long enough . . .’

They were both still giggling when they went into the other room with the tea for their guests.
