“You doctored files to save yourself from being investigated?”
“I found a loophole.” She spat. “I made my life simpler, and I pressed the advantage. I am overworked on a good day.”
Cameron threw up his hands. “Hey, we’re in this together. You go down, I go down. I was actually impressed by your cunning.”
“Yeah? Well, not cunning enough. If I had gotten to her first before they brought her in for a medical examination, we could have just killed her. The doctor opening her medical file alone overwrote the code.”
“You did what you had to—we both did. There was no way we could have seen this coming. Let’s just hope we have another ten years or so to live and make the most of our borrowed time.”
“Yes, that is all we can do.” She fell silent. She had been so concerned about their undoing, she had wanted to jump straight into the cold hard facts. Now she had relaxed a little, she wanted to know more about the baby.
“Can you show me a picture?”
Cameron typed in a few commands and sent the photographs attached to the medical file over to Lottie. She opened the file and looked down at the adorable, wrinkled, little baby.
“What’s her name?”
“It’s Chastity.”
Lottie looked at the picture a little longer and couldn’t help but to speak her thoughts aloud. “You sure are the sweetest, cutest little thing. I sure hope you don’t cause any trouble for us someday.”
Chapter 19 - Synopsis
Miriam and Hope and working to deliver a baby when Ruth goes into labour. Hope is sent alone, Miriam informing her the baby is too early and won’t make it. Hope tries everything she can, but the baby becomes obstructed and won’t deliver.
Trying to distract Ruth, Hope asks her what she wants to name her baby. Ruth answers Mark for her father, or Chastity for her mother. Ruth begs Hope to use one of those names for her baby if Ruth’s doesn’t make it.
Miriam arrives when finished with her other delivery and tries to bully her, and speaks rather sharply with Ruth also. Miriam orders her to deal with the obstruction, and Hope refuses. Miriam takes care of it herself but forces her to handle the burial of the baby’s body: Mark.
