  Acknowledgments

Thank you to Colleen Higgs for her decision to publish my book, and the wonderful editor she teamed me up with, Máire Fisher, who has been an absolute star, strengthening my writing, making great suggestions and giving me insights into my characters that I hadn’t even considered. Thank you Máire, you are a wonderful editor.

Thank you to Brigadier Mene, of the South African Police Services who gave generously of her time and experience and helped me understand the difficulties of becoming a police officer during the apartheid years in South Africa.

Thank you to Associate Professor Andrew ‘Mugsy’ Spiegel from UCT for his help and advice on Xhosa culture.

I acknowledge Joan Broster, distinguished author of Red Blanket Valley (published 1967). I met Joan in 2006 in Port Alfred and her descriptions of the life and rituals of the people of the Red Blanket Valley and her recollection of a young girl selected to receive an education provided inspiration for Now I See You. The rituals and words of the wedding song (page 201) were taken from Red Blanket Valley.

To my friends and family who have been so encouraging. A special thank you to the wonderful members of The Write Girls creative writing groups for their support and enthusiasm.

Last, but not least, an enormous thank you to my husband, Jack Holmes, for his constant support and practical advice, not to mention his patience. It’s not easy living with a writer!
