  TERMS

  Abiassa’s Fire – the gift of wielding the Flames, possessed by only certain individuals

  abiatasso – the gift in the essence of a person who has the ability to wield

  accelerant – one who can wield the Flames

  archon – leader of the Ematahri

  Auspex/Foreteller – semi-human creature held by Poired for the delivery of messages and orders from Sirdar

  Baen’s Crossing – village on border between Ybienn and the Nine

  cacique – the title used among those in Legier’s Heart for their leader

  Caori – one of the Nine Kingdoms; capital city is Luxlirien

  Choosing, the (aka Etaesian’s Feast) – Eilidan custom for bonding rituals

  Citadel – the central Sanctuary in the Holy City in Hetaera

  Cold-One’s Tooth – mountain peak nearest Nivar Hold

  cordi – fruit

  Deliverer – an ageless minister of justice and discipline; terrifyingly powerful; answers only to the will of Abiassa; also called Lucent Riders, Void Walker, Light Bringer

  Destroyers – demons

  Drigo – ancient race of giants whose only goal is to serve

  Drigovudd – the Drigo in their enhanced state; stories border on myth but they are said to be nearly immortal when in their vudd state

  Duamauri – Aselan’s icehound

  Eilidan – people of Legier; Aselan’s people

  Ematahri – fierce forest-dwellers; a threat to any traveling the Way of the Throne/Throne Road

  Etaesian’s Feast – see “Choosing, the”

  Fieri Keep – home of the Celahars, who rule from here on the Fire Throne

  Fierian, the – a prophesied accelerant said to bring about the destruction of the Nine and the eradication of the Lakes of Fire; greatly feared

  Fire King – king who rules the Nine and is most powerful accelerant

  Flames – reference to the gift bestowed on certain individuals; sometimes an epithet

  Great Falls – a waterfall blessed with miraculous healing every 100 years during the Year of Feasts as a gift from Abiassa

  Hetaera – largest city in the Nine; contains the Holy City; close to the Great Falls

  hiel-touck – oath used in Legier and Ybienn

  Holy City – the seat of the Ignatieri; the largest Sanctuary; contains the Citadel, where accelerants are trained and commissioned

  icehound – very large wolves who only exist in cold-weather climates

  Ignatieri – holy order of accelerants; refer to each other as The Brethren

  incipient – one who can wield but has turned against Abiassa

  Infantessa – the queen of Iteveria

  Iteveria – twin city to Nydessa, within Unelithia

  jav-rod – spearlike weapon

  Jujak – the army of King Zireli

  Karithia – palace in Iteveria; seat of the Infantessa

  Kedardokith – a rite of Ematahri warriors to claim the lives of outsiders; intended for protection; once claimed, always claimed

  Kerguli – a race of people from the desert Outlands of the far west

  Lakes of Fire – the lava lakes near Fieri Keep; a blessing of Abiassa and connected to the Flames

  Legier – largest mountain overlooking Ybienn; home to the Eilidan, a race of mountain dwellers

  Lucent Riders – the name given to the Deliverers by the Ematahri

  Luxlirien – capital city of Caori

  Maereni – Poired’s elite guards

  moonslight – light of twin moons

  Nivar Hold – seat of power in Ybienn; residence of King Thurig

  Nivari – Thurig’s army; commanded by his son, as’Tili

  pharmakeia – a physician who uses herbs and the Flames to bring healing/restoration

  Primera – Haegan’s planet

  raqine – winged creatures widely believed extinct or myth

  sentinel – Ignatieri police who patrol Sanctuaries

  Seultrie – seat of power for the Nine Kingdoms; capital city is Zaethien

  Shadows, the – beyond the grave

  Sikir – Aselan’s icehound

  Silver – name given to Poired’s elite incipients

  Sirdarian – one of Sirdar

  sowaoli petals – flower petals

  Tahsca/Tahscan – from House Tahsca off the coast of Iteveria; fiercest sea-faring warriors

  Unelithia – combined realm of Nydessa and Iteveria

  Void Walker – Deliverer or one of the evil counterparts; one who walks between worlds

  Ybienn – sovereign kingdom, separate from the Nine; seat of Thurig and his family
