“Oh heaven’s no,” Lark replied. “But I trust the goodness in most people, and we’ve seen it tonight, thanks to you.”

  She walked over and kissed Colin on the lips. “You never told me you could perform miracles.”

  Lark took his hand. “If this goes well, you won’t have to marry me.”

  “I’d like to see you stop me,” he laughed.

  She turned and they journeyed out of his hut. By the morning, Gertrude Pratt’s fever would have broken, but not before she confessed everything in front of the magistrate and Reverend Fervor. The men would have escorted the Reverend out of town with a stern warning that they considered it their Christian duty to protect all the villagers so long as they were good people and good neighbors.

  By the time Spring rolled around, Lark’s belly was swelling along with the buds on the tree. She and Colin were married by the stream near her cottage under a rose bower. Everyone attended except for the Pratts. But that was just fine with them. And when their son was born just before Summer’s end, his birth was celebrated by all.
