Noble Intent Page 28

by William Miller

  “The hell I can’t.”

“Sam made her own decisions,” Armstrong told him. “She did the right thing and she’s got a star on the wall at Langley.”

“That won’t bring her back,” Noble said.

Armstrong laid a hand on top of his. “You don’t have to die with her, Jake. Sam wouldn’t want that.”

He pulled his hand away, picked up his bottle and swigged. “It was my plan that put her on that boat. I’m the reason she’s dead.”

Armstrong shook her head. “You and I both know that’s not true. Sam would have seen it through with or without you.”

  “Maybe.”

They sat in silence for a while. Finally, Armstrong said, “Any chance you’re going to tell me where you stashed Duval?”

  Noble shook his head.

  “I figured as much.”

  Noble said nothing.

Armstrong lit a thin cigar while Noble drank. No more words were needed. They were both soldiers, in their own way, who had lost a comrade and the only cure for that was time. Armstrong finished her cigar, went to the door, stopped, and turned back. “Get yourself cleaned up, Noble. I’ve got work for you.”

  THE END.

  About the Author

I was born and raised in sunny Saint Petersburg, FL on a steady diet of action movies and fantasy novels. After 9/11, I left a career in photography to join the United States Army. Since then, I have travelled the world and done everything from teaching English in China to driving a forklift. I studied creative writing at Eckerd College and wrote four hard-boiled mysteries for Delight Games before releasing the first Jake Noble book. When not writing, I can be found indoor rock climbing, playing the guitar, and haunting smoke-filled jazz clubs in downtown Saint Pete. I’m currently at work on another Jake Noble thriller.
