“I guess I’ll do that,” I said putting a smile on my face. I sat watching him get dressed as I sat on the bed.

Once Paul was fully dressed, he kissed me on the lips.

“I’ll see you in a few hours, baby. I love you.”

“I love you too,” I said grinning.

After he had told the boys goodbye, he was out the door and on his way to work.

The boys and I were getting ready to watch a movie on Hulu when there was a knock at the door. I trotted towards the door, thinking it was Paul, forgetting something.

  “Baby, why didn’t you use…..”

Before I could finish my sentence, I was ambushed by Ryan! I was knocked to the floor as Ryan closed my front door and aimed a gun at me. He looked nervous and crazy. The boys were screaming for dear life. He wailed the gun around like a mad man.

  “Everybody be quiet!” he screamed.

The boys stopped crying and yelling, but they were whimpering.

He looked completely different. His short haircut that he was sporting the last time I’d seen him was gone. His head was completely bald.

“What’s going on? Why are you in my house?” I asked in a shaky voice. I was scared that I was about to die. I got up, scurried over towards the boys, and made them stand behind me.

Ryan ignored me and paced back and forth. He was looking crazy. I eyed my cell phone that sat on the coffee table. It was within arm’s reach.

Ryan turned on the television and went straight to the news.

“This is breaking news. We just got word that they have a suspect in the murder case of Renee George, who was shot to death and left in a wooded area.”

I sat there glancing at the screen to Ryan.

“The suspect wanted for questioning is Bryce Mitchell,” said the reporter.

I was instantly confused why he was watching the news. Before I could blink, Ryan’s mugshot was plastered on the screen. What in the hell is going on?

“Bryce had previously been in prison for identity theft and fraud. We just got word that George and Mitchell had a past relationship that recently ended. Bryce and George are from Maryland. Bryce is considered dangerous. He may be going by different aliases. If you or anyone knows his whereabouts, please call the number below.”

I couldn’t believe this shit. Ryan was Bryce. All types of flashbacks from conversations played in my mind.

“I don’t stay in places too long. I love changes of scenery. She wasn’t the woman for me. She didn’t know how to treat a good man.”

I remember when I met Renee and we had our first lunch together, she mentioned how she was originally born in Annapolis Maryland, but moved to Jacksonville seven years ago to leave her abusive ex-boyfriend. That boyfriend was Ryan, I mean Bryce. This nigga was crazy.

“Fuck! I didn’t mean to do it! I’m so stupid,” he ranted and raved.

“I can’t go to prison! I just wanted to start my life over. I wanted Magdalena to be mine, but after you had shut me down for that stupid clown you were fighting over, I tried to make things work with Renee because she was a good woman. I had fucked up a great thing. I went to see her and she was so mean to me—she was cold. I tried to apologize, but she just wouldn’t shut up. She wouldn’t let me talk. I lost it. I didn’t mean to hurt her,” he confessed.

I sat there with wide eyes as he spilled his guts. I was lost for words. He kept rambling.

“I wanted to start my life over. I met a great woman and now I can’t even be with her because I’m going to prison!” He cried and fell to his knees, wailing the gun as he cried.

Before I could bat an eyelid, his gun went off!

  POW!

  Chapter 18

  Kimora

We were having a blast in Miami. The weather was nice and daddy was doing his thing on the grill. We had ribs, burgers, hot sausages, and chicken. Adrienne had made some bomb potatoes salad and baked macaroni and cheese.

“You’re about to pop! I don’t know how you’re even on your feet right now,” I said.

“Tell me about it! I’m surprised that I’ve made it to thirty-five weeks since I’m carrying twin boys,” she said while taste testing the macaroni and cheese.

“I’m so happy for you and daddy. I’m still in amazement that you two are having two babies,” I smiled.

While Adrienne and I were having girl talk, Neron walked into the kitchen. He kissed me on the cheek as he bypassed me to get to the fridge. He grabbed a cold beer from inside.

“How are the kids?” he asked.

“They’re good. They’re still napping in the other room. I have the baby monitor right here,” I said holding it up. Neron was such a good father. I loved it!

“Cool,” he said, popping the top of his beer.

My cell phone rang and it was my mother.

  “Hello,” I said chipper.

“Oh my God, Kimora! Robert is on the news! He killed himself! He was responsible for a murder and he knew Gaby and somehow went to her house! She’s on the news,” she shrieked.

  “Oh my, God,” I yelled.

Adrienne and Neron looked at me like I was crazy.

“Hold on,” I told my mother as I put her on speakerphone.

Neron asked what happened and she repeated to him what she said.

“Is Gaby and the boys okay?” I asked.

“She’s fine. She said they barely dated and he just showed up at her house, waving a gun after her boyfriend left for work. He confessed to the murder and killed himself in front of her and the boys. His name wasn’t even Robert! It was Bryce, but she knew him as Ryan,” Mom aid crying.

I felt terrible. My mom found someone she genuinely liked, and all along, he was a fraud using her to hide from the police.

“I thought he looked familiar at my grand opening, but I couldn’t pinpoint it,” I replied, shockingly.

“Yes, a few days prior to the grand opening, he shaved his head. I didn’t think anything of it,” Mom sobbed.

“Mom, stop crying. We will fly back tomorrow to be with you. Stop crying mom. You deserve someone who will be honest with you and not hide things from you. He wasn’t a good man, Mama,” I said, trying to cheer her up.

“I feel I’m being punished for how I treated you and Kennard back in the day,” she confessed.

No, you’re not being punished. Nobody deserves to be deceived and lied to,” I said. I looked up, not noticing that Kennard was in the room.

“Mama, stop crying!” Kennard said in his deep voice. “You don’t need anybody like that in your life.”

“Thank you mama’s babies,” she said sniffling.

“Ms. Murphy, we will see you tomorrow. Stay off the news and try and get some rest,” Neron replied.

“Okay, I’ll talk to y’all later,” she said ending the call.

Neron whipped out his phone and called Gabriela.

  “Neron?” she answered.

“I just heard what happened. Are you guys okay?” he asked sincerely.

“We’re fine. We’re just really shook up. My boyfriend is on the way home and will be to us shortly because I’m scared to be home alone. He shot himself right in front of us,” she said sadly.

“I’m sorry you guys had to go through that,” I chimed in. “I’m glad you guys are okay.”

There was silence for a few seconds.

“Thank you, Kimora. I was scared. He had killed a woman that I was friends with and I didn’t even know they had dated prior.”

  “Damn,” I said.

“He was Kimora’s mother’s boyfriend. He was going by Robert with her,” Neron replied.

  “WHAT?” she asked in disbelief.

“Yeah, mom is really shaken up too,” I said.

“Damn. Look, I know we aren’t supposed to be talking right now, but I’m sorry for all the drama and chaos I brought to y’all. I just really want to see my daughter and be a part of her life. You two don’t know this, but I tried to end my life a month ago. It was selfish of me to do
so, but I changed my life. I’m seeing a psychiatrist, dieting, jogging and even enrolled in school. I found a great man and I can’t imagine an ex-girlfriend or someone trying to come between us the way that I was with you two. Seeing my life flash before my eyes, made me realize how stupid and petty I was. It might not mean much, but I’m truly sorry from the bottom of my heart,” Gabriela confessed.

“Thank you,” Neron and I said in unison.

We still didn’t trust Gaby and we weren’t about to sit here and chat like we were friends or some shit, but hearing her apologize spoke volumes. It’s sad how it took a tragedy to bring people together or to open up someone eyes, though.

“Well, I won’t hold you guys. Thanks for calling, Neron.”

“No problem. Alright,” Neron said hanging up.

“Now, isn’t that some shit, an apology from Gabriela?” Neron said, taking a swig of his beer.

“I’m glad she’s getting help though because her issues from her childhood have messed her head up. Maybe one day she can get her life completely on track and see Mag,” I replied.

“Yeah, she needed help. I’m glad she’s getting it because most folks hate admitting to their faults and refuse help. Good for her.” Neron walked out of the room.

  Chapter 18

  Gabriela

My daughter and Kimora’s son had just turned one and they were having a huge birthday party in their backyard. They had bounce houses, tons of pizza, gift bags, and a clown. We had about twenty kids running around Kimora and Neron’s backyard. I smiled seeing Adrienne, Kimora’s mother and father all interacting, laughing and passing around Adrienne’s adorable twins.

“Okay everyone, it is cake time,” Kimora announced. She clapped her hands to get everyone’s attention. I picked up Magdalena while Kimora held Junior’s hand. We placed them onto a picnic table and let them go to town on their cakes.

“Ahahahahah,” I laughed as I watched Junior and Magdalena smash cake into each other’s faces.

Paul stood next to me and recorded everything. The boys were thrilled to be able to see their niece again.

I had done a complete turnaround. I was pill free and over thirty days sober. I was completely finished with alcohol, period. I was doing well in school, Paul and I were going strong and I was six weeks pregnant. Paul didn’t know yet, but I was going to tell him tonight over dinner. Things were going great. I took Neron back to court and got my parental rights reinstated. I was now able to see Magdalena, unsupervised on the weekends because the judge saw that I could provide a stable home and environment. We had moved from my old apartment into a condo on the west side of town.

The restraining order was lifted. Neron kept his distance and we didn’t talk much, but we kept it respectful towards one another when we did have to communicate. I was actually cordial with Kimora too, for the sake of the kids. Granted we would never be friends again, but we were now able to have light conversations and be in the same room together.

I was shocked when Kimora reached out to me and asked if I cared to have a joined birthday party for the kids. Of course, I accepted. She cared for Magdalena as if she had birthed her, herself. I respected that she cared for my child as if she was her own. She and Neron were planning to get married in two months and I wasn’t hurt or jealous. I had grown a lot. Both of their businesses were thriving and doing well too. I was happy for them.

As for the woman that birthed me, she was serving three years in prison for the assault charge. I was officially granted sole custody of my brothers. She hadn’t reached out to me to apologize or check on her son’s, but it didn’t matter because the boys didn’t care to hear from her at all.

I was grateful to be back in my daughter’s life. That day when Ryan or Bryce came by, put my life into perspective. Life was too short trying to make someone love you. Some women like myself; thought that having a baby will force the man to love you, but usually it does the complete opposite. Having a baby by a person doesn't change a person's behavior. I lucked out that Neron was such a great father because I could’ve got an asshole for a baby daddy and be a single mom. Thank God, we had been able to patch up our relationship slowly.

I glanced around the huge backyard and silently thanked God for changing my life around. I no longer had the desire to be the baby mama from hell. I just had the desire to be a better person.
