“I find that very hard to believe, Dylan. In fact, I find the entire thing farfetched.” She picked up a pen and began tapping it rhythmically against the folder that apparently held enough evidence to torpedo his career. “I find it hard to believe that you don’t know where your best friend is hiding out and I find it even harder to believe that you had no idea who Sabrina Kelly was. Especially since you’d already run a search on her name almost a full week before her arrest and release.”
Dylan bit the inside of his mouth to keep from saying anything. At this point, it was better to keep silent and see which nail would be the last one in his coffin. There was no use trying to concoct a story until he knew exactly what charges were being leveled at him.
“Additionally, I have a voucher here for where you signed out a laptop loaded with the remote mug shot books and then returned it a week later. Yet there’s not a case number associated with the check-out, just your name. Would you like to tell me what the purpose of that was?”
Dylan shrugged again. There was really no good answer to that question. Or at least, there wasn’t an answer that didn’t have Sabrina running all through it.
His superior sighed. “Dylan, I have to say I find your loyalty admirable. I could only wish that you were as loyal to the law as you are to your friends.” She paused and waited for him to answer but he only stayed silent. “Have it your way. I’m not sure if you realize how serious this is. You could be charged with aiding and abetting a suspect in the commission of a crime.”
That galvanized him into action. “And what crime would that be?”
Pamela showed the first sign of her frustrated impotence then. She tossed the pen she had been tapping onto the blotter in disgust. “No crime, thanks to you. This woman who calls herself Sabrina Kelly bears a striking resemblance to a woman with at least three other aliases that we know of, is a witness in two cases, and a person of interest in one other. Did you ever stop to think that that we weren’t the only precinct that deserved a crack at her? Once her fingerprints popped in the system, people who had active APBs out on her were notified. Now they’re breathing down my neck wanting to know why we let her go!”
Her voice had grown progressively louder as she had continued her explanation and by the end Dylan was looking at the door uneasily. He didn’t mind taking his lumps, but he’d rather the entire office not be privy to the punishment. “Again, I can only apologize for my poor judgment. Maybe a suspension is in order,” he threw out as a bone.
She gave a harsh laugh. “Oh, we’re way past that now. My boss wants a head on a plate and I’m giving him yours.”
“What does that mean?” he asked. “Do I need to go in front of some sort of disciplinary board or something?”
“No.” She shook her head sadly and pulled one last piece of paper from the manila folder and handed it to him. Before he had a chance to look at it, she spoke again. “Until and unless you start explaining this mess and can give me an explanation that doesn’t involve you breaking protocol to help out your friend, your position here is at an end.”
Dylan felt his blood run cold and his mind rushed to decode the words. “You mean I’m fired?”
She nodded sharply. “Effective immediately.”
“But…it was just a mistake,” he said, shock settling into his bones.
“We don’t happen to see it that way. We see it as a calculated plan to help this woman avoid prosecution.” Pamela returned the rest of her evidence to her manila folder and then closed it. She folded her hands on the top and finally looked Dylan straight in the eye. “In light of your years of service to this office, and due to the embarrassment it would cause us, you’re not going to be charged.”
Dylan made no answer, he simply concentrating on breathing in and out.
“I’m sorry about this, Dylan, I am. You’re a great prosecutor but…you know as well as I do that a prosecutor has to be above reproach. This latest antic is just too close to the line. If you can help us apprehend Sabrina Kelly, then we can discuss your reinstatement.”
“A plea bargain?” Dylan shook his head and gave a dry laugh. “I think before I say anything I’m going to consult my lawyer,” he said wryly.
She inclined her head and Dylan stood and reached to grab his briefcase, just then realizing that he still had the piece of paper she had given him in a tightly clenched fist.
He smoothed it out in order to be able to read the first couple of lines. Mr. Paulson, We regret to inform you…
He shoved the letter in his jacket pocket and headed for the door. Behind him he heard Pamela stand up, but he was outside before she could stop him or say anything more. He walked quickly to the front of the office, ignoring the greetings of the other people in the building. If he stopped moving he was liable to start punching the wall or the person nearest to him, and then he really would have a criminal case against him.
He reached the revolving door and pushed his way through it with more force than necessary. A cool blast of air soothed his overheated skin and he tipped his face up to where the sun hid behind the clouds. The only bright spot in a world full of gray for him.
What the hell was he going to do now?
