Stefanos looked out across the water. “Karras and the Italos…sure, I know what happened. Those two, they didn’t know enough to get off the bus.”
“What?”
“Nothin’. It’s just a story.” Stefanos stood straight. “C’mon, let’s take a little walk around the speedway, re. That okay with you?”
“Me?” said Costa. “I don’t give a damn nothing.”
Nick Stefanos picked up the boy, who was also named Nick Stefanos, and the three of them walked over the lush green grass, passing a Negro couple who sat together, their arms intertwined, in the shade of a flowering tree.
About the Author
GEORGE P. PELECANOS was born in Washington, D.C., in 1957. A graduate of the University of Maryland, he held a variety of jobs, including electronics salesman, bartender, shoe salesman, and construction worker, before getting involved in the film industry. He recently finished producing his first feature film, Caught. In 1992, he published his first Nick Stefanos mystery novel, A Firing Offense, and has subsequently published two other mysteries—Nick’s Trip and Down by the River Where the Dead Men Go—as well as one crime novel, Shoedog. He now lives in Silver Spring, Maryland, with his wife, Emily, and their two sons, Nicholas and Peter.
