  “And?”

  Jack brushed a stray strand of hair off my face. “If you’re asking what I think you’re asking, I decided to pass.”

  “Pass,” I said.

  “I didn’t really think we needed any more money, and I kind of figured you might think it was ill-gotten gains, or something, so—”

  I cut him off by planting my mouth firmly on his. Eventually I told him, “You kind of figured right.”

  At that extremely inconvenient moment, the phone rang. Jack struggled rather ungallantly to get away from me. “It’s for you.” He reached for the phone.

  “How do you know?”

  “Because I told her you’d meet her in the lobby.” He handed me the receiver. “It’s the realtor.”

  Damn.
