Wyatt grinned hugely. “You know this was all a setup to get us together, don’t you?”
“What?”
“Every bit of it,” he told her. “Leo couldn’t stand the idea of me being alone once he was gone, and he couldn’t have found a more generous, kindhearted, loving woman to be by my side. You blew me away, Jane, the way you took care of me, the way you just gave yourself to me, the way you loved me. I’ll do the same for you. I promise. Every day of our lives.”
“Oh, do you think they’ll go to Vegas to get married?” Gladdy asked. “I want to go back to Vegas! What was the name of the chapel?”
“The Love Me Tender Wedding Chapel. Leo would have loved that. Oh, I almost forgot.” Gram hurried to Wyatt’s side, pulled the huge diamond ring off her finger and handed it to Wyatt. “Leo wanted you to have this. For Jane.”
Gram backed out of the room, grinning hugely herself.
Wyatt looked particularly pleased to have a big, sparkly diamond to hold out to her. “See, they’ve forgiven me, and I adore them both, too. They’re going to be the greatest in-laws a man ever had.”
“Oh, yes. We will,” Gladdy agreed from the doorway.
They were ganging up on her. She couldn’t believe it! And Gram and Gladdy were not quick to forgive, not toward anyone who hurt Jane.
“It’s a really nice ring,” Gram added. “You always said a woman should never refuse good, quality diamonds from a man, Jane.”
Jane rolled her eyes, shook her head. Her foot hurt. Her heart hurt.
Wyatt looked as if he’d spent the night in the gutter, passed out drunk, and woken up to some kind of nightmare. She’d never seen him look anything close to awful, and he probably never would. But he looked truly bad right now. Tortured, he’d said. A crazy man who just had to get to her.
“I’m so scared,” she whispered.
“So am I, but I’m more scared of being without you,” he explained, sounding as honest as a man could be.
If they were both scared, they were at least being honest and at least halfway smart about this, Jane reasoned.
After all, it was an enormous thing, promising your life to someone, to love, honor and cherish, forever.
“I’ll sign any kind of prenup you want,” Wyatt added. “Just…you know…because I know you’ll want one.”
“Well, that would be at least one smart thing to do,” she admitted.
“And Vegas sounds good,” he said. “I have some very fond memories of being in Vegas with you, even with the awful stuff with Leo. We could go back to Vegas.”
“We get to go, too, right?” Gladdy asked, sounding delighted. “We want to go!”
“You want to run off right now and get married in Vegas?” Jane couldn’t believe it. Just when he was starting to sound reasonable.
“We could even pack this time.”
Gram and Gladdy giggled.
“That’s crazy, Wyatt.”
“I’m a crazy man, Jane. Crazy about you. What do you say? Vegas?”
“It’s crazy. He’s crazy,” she yelled to Gram and Gladdy.
“We’ll start packing right now,” Gram said.
Wyatt had her hand in his, was sliding the ring on her finger and she wasn’t pulling away.
“Marry me,” he said. “Love me tender, I’ll love you back the same way.”
“Wyatt, it’s just nuts!”
But by nightfall, he had her on a plane to Vegas, with her panties on this time, but not for long, Wyatt promised.
