  Acknowledgments

This book is the culmination of many years of study. I have benefited enormously from the wisdom of a number of teachers who have shared their knowledge and urged me to explore the origins of the modern Middle East. At Columbia, as an undergraduate, I was blessed to find myself in an introductory course on the Middle East taught by Richard Bulliet, and his eclectic humor and profound insights have never been far from my mind. Later, at Oxford, Derek Hopwood and Roger Owen prodded me to think more critically about the ebb and flow of Middle Eastern history and dispatched me to Cairo to see for myself.

In researching Parting the Desert, I was fortunate to have Yael Schacher as a research assistant. She delved into the tomes and journals, and found sources I might not have stumbled upon without her. She has since begun her own journey toward a Ph.D., which I’m sure she’ll complete with the same creative efficiency. I was also aided by the skilled guidance of the staff at the Centre des Archives du Monde du Travail in Roubaix, France, who helped me navigate the records of the Suez Canal Company.

Several scholars agreed to assess the manuscript. Patrice Higonnet of Harvard persuaded me to take a more nuanced aproach toward the Second Empire and Napoleon III, while Peter Marsh of the University of Birmingham encouraged me to reconsider my presentation of Palmerston and mid-nineteenth-century British politics. Finally, Roger Owen meticulously went over the whole text with his usual exacting standards. I have benefited immeasurably from their critiques, and I thank them all for their time and candor. I also had the good fortune to spend some time with Alexandre de Lesseps, who shared his family lore and made sure I was well versed in Ferdinand.

As a friend and an agent, John Hawkins has been an incredible ally and a constant source of support, and at his office, Matthew Miele and Moses Cardona have expertly dealt with details great and small. At Knopf, my editor, Ash Green, has once again demonstrated his pitch-perfect ear for prose that works and prose that doesn’t, and his friendship has meant everything. Luba Ostashevsky has managed to keep the production process moving forward, and I thank her for her seemingly endless patience. Paul Bogaards, Kathryn Zuckerman, Nicholas Latimer, and Sheila O’Shea remain the best in the business, and, of course, thanks to Sonny Mehta.

Finally, there are two people who in very different ways made this entire journey possible. Writing this particular book was something of a labor, and I know for a certainty that without my wife, Nicole, by my side, urging me, encouraging me, and succoring me, I would not have had the strength. I hope she knows how vital that was and how vital to me she is. And to Albert Hourani, who taught me to appreciate the melody of the modern Middle East, I hope that this book honors his memory.
