“Truffle sure loves to perform,” said Henry, scratching the puppy under his chin.

“I knew you could do it,” Mr. Power said.

“There was a moment when I wasn’t so sure,” Sadie admitted. “But when I heard Mango call out, I knew I could do it, too.”

Mr. Power looked at her, and so did her parents and her friends. “Mango called out?” Mr. Power said uncertainly. He turned and looked closely at the colorful parrot on his shoulder. “I didn’t hear anything.”

Lexi, Max, and Henry all shook their heads.

“Yes,” Sadie said confidently. “I am sure of it. He said, ‘Great team.’ ”

“Really?” Mr. Power mused. “Funny, I didn’t hear him. Maybe it was just in your head?”

Sadie looked at the bird and wondered if that was possible. “Mango?” she asked. For once, the bird did not respond. He lifted one of his feet and pecked it with his beak. Sadie wondered what she had heard. Was the voice really in her own head?

  RRRufff! Truffle insisted.

“Yes, Truffle,” Mr. Reynolds said, bending down to pet the puppy. Truffle put his front paws on the man’s leg. “You did a good job.”

“Yes, definitely,” Sadie’s mom agreed. “But I think Truffle’s best trick was helping our Sadie see how talented she is.”

Sadie looked around at all the people who had been there for her. It felt pretty amazing. She and Truffle were a team, but there were a lot of other members of their team, too.

Truffle barked again. He stepped into the middle of the circle that they had all made. He spun around twice, and then he bent down and bowed.

They all clapped for Truffle, the little dog with the special tricks. Sadie clapped and cheered the loudest. She could not have been more proud of her puppy, and she was proud of herself, too.
