“Just follow my lead.” Sebastian whispered in her ear as he pulled her closer.
“Easier said than done.” She mumbled.
“Relax your body.”
Music had already been playing, so Aline and Sebastian didn’t need to wait too long before starting their first ever dance. His arms held onto her tightly, his fingers pressing onto her waist. Aline tried to focus her attention on the beat, her legs already mimicking Sebastian’s steps. Looking around, she couldn’t help but compare herself to the other girls dancing. They looked so gracious, as if they floated around in their beautiful dresses.
“Focus only on me.” That wasn’t hard to do. Sebastian had an aura that could fill an entire room.
Just as he had ordered, Aline focused on their bodies only. She tried relaxing, trusting him completely. She had one hand over his shoulder and the other grasped between his fingers.
“You really weren’t joking when you said you are a bad dancer.” Sebastian joked, a chuckle rumbling through his chest.
Aline tried to look hurt, a dramatic gasp playing on her lips, as she suddenly stopped to playfully slap him across the shoulder.
“I’m joking! Come back here.” He said, as he pulled her back into the dance, this time, he didn’t bother with positioning their hands right, he simply held onto her as they swayed their bodies to the rhythm of the song.
Aline had rested her head on his shoulder, the familiar scent of his body filling her nostrils.
“So, how are we going to do it?” Aline suddenly found herself asking. At the thought of it alone, her whole body seemed to shake under the power of adrenaline.
“Do what?” Sebastian frowned, pulling back slightly, so he could look into her eyes.
“You know, steal the information.” Aline whispered that last part into her ear, afraid that someone could overhear their conversation.
None of them seemed to have noticed, but they were no longer dancing. They looked at one another, as if finally remembering their purpose there. Aline searched through his eyes, trying to decipher what he was exactly thinking. However, truth be told, it was kind of hard. She wondered if he was having second thoughts, just as she was. She was about to ask about it but before she managed to even curl her tongue, a voice came from behind them:
“Sebastian! I see you made it.” Aline hadn’t heard the voice too many times before, but she recognized it instantly.
Slowly, she turned to face her, a smile playing on her lips.
“Happy birthday, Marie.” Sebastian said, right before Aline wished her the exact same thing.
“Thank you. But you know, you kind of stole the spotlight today…” The woman trailed off as she took a sip from the bubbly drink she had in hand.
Aline didn’t understand what the woman was implying. She looked between her and Sebastian, the moment of silence extending terribly. Aline hated being left aside; she didn’t exactly like it when everyone seemed to know something she didn’t.
The curiosity that burned in her chest eventually surfaced and she asked:
“What do you mean?”
Marie looked shocked. She frowned and looked at Sebastian,
“You didn’t tell her?”
Aline’s heart nearly stopped. She feared what he was about to say next. She wasn’t exactly used to good news. You could have called her a pessimist, but when life was as hard as it was on her, you were bound to fear the worst.
“Sebastian here signed a contract today with the European investors. Everyone is talking about his expansion across US borders.”
At first, Aline thought she heard it all wrong. She understood every word Marie said, but when she came to make sense of them, her mind seemed to stop. Frowning, she looked at Sebastian, who was nodding, a smile on his face. Through his lashes, he studied her expression, clearly happy with the confusion he saw.
“Anyway, congratulations. Just next year, try to just give me a gift instead of taking one.” Marie chuckled, before she left them both alone.
In Aline’s head, there was nothing but confusion. She kept playing Marie’s words in her mind, and the revising the plan she had made with Sebastian a month before.
“Is it true?” She whispered, earning a nod from the man in front of her. “But how? What about the documents I was supposed to steal?”
“A few weeks ago, I started acknowledging my feelings for you. I got to know you better, and I realized you don’t deserve to be put in the position where you are supposed to steal.”
“But that was our deal. You could have lost it all!”
“I could have. But I decided you were worth it. A few days ago, I asked the investors to meet up, and I gave my proposal. They waited until today to respond. Apparently, Marie’s miraculous offer wasn’t as good as she thought.”
Aline was simply speechless. She looked at the man, and she almost couldn’t believe that the hard rock that everyone knew, was actually that soft. Smiling, she grabbed his hands and looked around, before saying:
“Thank you.”
“You don’t have to thank me. Instead, promise me you will give us a fair shot. Aline, I don’t know how it happened, but I think I’ve fallen in love with you.”
Her heart stopped there and then. The world seemed to stop and everyone disappeared. Although there was still music playing around them, Aline heard nothing but complete and utter silence. She looked at Sebastian, words caught up in her throat.
Looking at Sebastian, Aline saw more than just a man. He was her knight in shining armor. He saved her from the fate from which she had been destined before, and brought her into a world full of color and life. She owed him everything, including the happiness she felt when he was around.
If she were to truly look deep into herself, there was no questioning that he felt the same about him. She was, completely and utterly in love with him.
“I love you too!” She said before she rose on her tiptoes, capturing his lips between hers.
