by Alex Connor
Her name was Tita Boldini...
I am writing this forty years on from these events. At the beginning I promised you honesty – and I have kept my word. What follows next in my story you will discover in due course; it is enough to state that Marina Castilano returned to Venice; the Dutchman was betrayed to the Inquisition; and Caterina Zucca came more and more under the protection of her guard, Bakita. As for the others - Nikolas Volt, that ally of the feared Adamo Baptista - followed the hapless Lauret to his native France; and Aretino kept collecting secrets and filling his pockets.
I had been an innocent once, but had chosen to be corrupted. So I stood by as the Wolves of Venice gathered from all corners of the city to feed off the new arrivals.
And I waited for the ghetto to claim their revenge.
