  “Good.” John stood, his saddlebag in one hand; Paul’s lay on the floor next to him. A part of John wanted to bring it with him, but he knew that it was better this way. Make a clean break.

  John walked out to the horse, tied on his saddlebag, and then lifted David onto the animal’s back. John climbed on and led the horse out to the road, where he steered it west. Overhead the sky was a brilliant blue and a hawk circled slowly, its wings riding the thermals.
