Mirror Land Page 6

by Kirstie Riley

“Just leave it; we’ll do it in the morning.” Gary stood up, yawning and came to kneel beside her. “In this light you’re bound to cut yourself. You are clumsy, after all.” He grinned at her mischievously.

She mock glared at him indignantly before looking back down again, a slight frown on her face as she tilted her head. “That’s strange.”

  “Hmm?”

“Well I know it’s obvious, what with the mirror being broken, but our images are really distorted. I can’t even tell it’s us.” Kay moved slightly, trying to tell apart parts of the shattered image before them.

  But...

A desolate room gathers dust, the once bright colours fading behind the grey film. A dress hangs behind a full length mirror, completely forgotten.

The mirror slips sideways, knocked by a curtain billowing in from an open window. With no-one there to hear it, it falls with a silent crash.

Inside the mirror’s reflective gaze shapes still linger. Flitting shadows dance across. The curtain, the dress’s trail and perhaps a flicker of something else.

Who’s to tell which mirror image was the real one?

To those that we have lost along the way.

I hope that we are on the wrong side of the mirror.

And you are watching us just out of sight.

  A Trail of Cards

Are you ready to play the game?

Shay, a private detective is pulled swiftly into a dwindling police force in a city with an alarmingly ever growing crime rate. A city where people are more likely to trust a gang on the streets for protection than those designed to protect them. But how can he help them deal with cases when there's suspicion and doubt over his skills? When there's an obvious mistrust for getting outsiders involved in their work?

Meanwhile, a vigilante is playing games with the team, making it obvious that he can do their job better than they can with mocking messages left at every criminal he gets to first. But who is this shadowed figure that is running rings around them? And why can't Shay seem to get anything other than cryptic messages when he tries to find out?

Following the trail of cards left behind may not lead to the answers that were expected...
