  She knew the rogues he led into war hadn’t made it, or, at least a good majority were lost. Many packs became extinct because of Celeste. Because of Logan.

  It was time to rebuild.

  “I believe you were passionate about a particular issue before Celeste became a threat,” Nicolas mused over her head. “Perhaps you can rekindle that interest.”

  Hayden frowned into his chest, trying to remember, but coming up empty.

  “What’s that?”

  “Finding females who are willing to learn how to fight. Training them to defend themselves and give them a voice.” He tightened his hold on her. “There are far too many females who are mistreated and do not possess the resources to get out of their situation.”

  Hayden stood stiffly in his arms, absorbing his words as if she didn’t quite understand them. She had that desire before, she remembered.

  It seemed like a lifetime ago.

  A faraway memory and a fleeting passion.

  Nicolas’ large hand covered her back, settling between her shoulder blades. Slowly, firmly, he moved it across her back. She knew immediately he sensed her unease and he disapproved. It was his nonverbal command to relax.

  Under his request, Hayden forced herself to let go.

  “Will you be with me?”

  “Every step,” he vowed.

  They had all the time in the world.

  He was here now.

  They were ready for their next adventure. Together.
