“No thanks are necessary. I owe your mate my life, so I am glad to repay a fraction of that debt,” Jace replied as he stood.
Braeden followed suit, keeping Donovan close as he looked around the room. It was destroyed, and Pema and Suvi were crouched around a circle of blood that surrounded the dead female. He refused to put his son down and Donovan must’ve felt the same way as he clung to his neck. “You are safe now, buddy. Papa won’t let anything happen to you, ever again,” he said as he kissed his son’s head.
“I knew you’d save me,” Donovan said, finally lifting his head from Braeden’s shoulder. His son bravely looked around him and his eyes settled on Isis. “You came back, just like you promised.”
“I did,” Isis said, her eyes filling with tears. “I’m sorry it wasn’t sooner. I will always come for you, Donovan.” He nodded to her and Braeden wrapped his arm around Isis, bringing her to their side. Donovan watched curiously, but was distracted by movement behind him. He felt his son’s body tense and noticed he was frantically scanning the room before he relaxed again in his arms. He squeezed him tighter, wanting him to know he was safe now.
“Where’s the bad lady? Is she still here?”
“No, little one, she’s gone,” Braeden reassured him.
“The bad lady brought her down here right before you came to get me,” Donovan said, pointing to the dead female.
“You don’t need to worry about her anymore,” Dante added. “You’re safe and we will catch her.”
“She is even farther gone than I thought. She used dark magic to try and bind a demon to her daughter’s body,” Evzen explained as he pointed to the runes written in blood on the table.
“And, you can guarantee she’s not done with us yet,” Suvi said, glancing at her sisters.
“Did you feel how much extra power we had just now? I don’t think it was the diamond, either. I think it may have been Ronan and Braeden,” Pema added, settling against her mate.
“I felt it, and you could be right, but I don’t want to think about that right now. We will deal with this tomorrow. Let’s take Donovan home, Braeden. We have a mating to plan,” Isis responded, kissing Donovan’s soft, brown curls. Donovan gazed at her wide-eyed and grabbed Isis’ hand in his. With that one small gesture, Isis had won his son’s heart.
Somehow, Braeden thought, they would overcome this evil together. He was complete for the first time in his life with his Fated Mate at his side and his son safe in his arms.
