by Gayle Callen
Maeve, their housekeeper whether in the manor or castle, made a halfhearted attempt to slow her down, then laughed.
Cat watched her daughter fondly, knowing the girl was still getting used to skirts, but at least she didn’t trip this time.
“Nothing’s finished,” Duncan grumbled.
“It’ll never be truly finished,” Cat said, her usual reply in this last year since they’d become man and wife. “But we’ll make do. My brother, your sisters, all the rest of our combined families will be pleased to see the great hall looking so magnificent.”
And it did. The stone walls soared up to a beamed ceiling. Banners and tapestries hung everywhere, as did the ancient weapons of Clan Carlyle. She stood with her hands on the rail of the cradle where their infant son lay sleeping, and admired it all. Much of her dowry had gone to help the Carlyle people, to buying new cattle and horses, replenishing seed, refurbishing the manor house that Duncan had grown up in, making it truly homelike.
But not home. Carlyle Castle connected Duncan to his family and his past. It would be their home permanently someday soon. For now, home was this man, their daughter, their new son.
Duncan came to her, and put his large, rough hand on the downy black hair of their bairn. And then Duncan looked up at her, and the smile he gave her burst with so much joy, that once again, she had to blink back tears.
This man could always make her cry. And they were tears of happiness, contentment—and faith.
