  Prologue

Alicia was a morning person. She did not understand people who would sleep through the glory and beauty of the morning; the fresh and mildly cold air, the morning sun shining above and the chirping of birds waking up. It was the first day back at college and Alicia was excited for the plethora of untapped potential that seemed ridiculously imminent in the new school term. September was a wonderful month. Alicia was starting her senior year at college. It was thirty minutes after nine as she sat on the bench and observed the peaceful morning scene in front of her. She had arrived a day early, so the campus was pretty much empty. None of her own friends had arrived yet which gave her plenty of time to enjoy quiet mornings with a book and coffee. Students were beginning to arrive slowly, returning from summer break with varying expressions of happiness and gloominess. Alicia put down the book she was reading and picked up her phone to check the time. Her three best friends were to arrive a few minutes later, and Alicia was anxious to see them already.

Blake Stanley suddenly appeared at her side. He grinned as she excitedly greeted him, draping an arm around her and giving her an affectionate squeeze.

  “You’re up early,” Alicia noted.

“I got here last night. James hadn’t arrived, so I had no reason to stay up late,” he told her. “I’ll see you at the fresher’s orientation.”

He walked away, waving and greeting a few other people. Some passersby greeted Alicia, and a few came up to say, “Hi.” It was forty minutes past nine now, and the campus residential area was quickly beginning to crowd. It was forty-five minutes past nine when Alicia received a text from Jane, asking her to come to the gate to help her bring her luggage in. Jane always had insanely large bags that were too big for a petite girl like her. Alicia stood up and had yet to take a step when her eyes fell on James Carter. She hadn’t noticed him arrive but now he stood with Blake, and they were laughing about something. For a moment, Alicia observed the two friends. The warm morning light caught James’ hair as well as the amused glint in his hazel eyes. He ran one hand through his hair, shaking his head and replied to a remark from Blake that made the latter laugh.

Alicia’s mind suddenly leaped to a moment not long ago – was it a month? Or three weeks? – When she had stood close enough to fill the space and then some that currently existed between the two friends – close enough to feel James’s breath, close enough to kiss him, if only she had let her brain stop thinking for a few moments longer. It had been a warm summer evening, and they had both been slightly drunk. Finding themselves standing a little too close for comfort, they had been on the verge of it, but the kiss never happened which had been much more disappointing for James than for Alicia back then.

And then, she realized something. Right then, she wanted nothing more than to kiss James Carter.

  She likes James Carter.

  She really liked James Carter.

And James Carter, who had liked her once before, and might like her again, if given the encouragement…

For a moment, Alicia was happy. For a few wonderful moments, she was very happy. People walked passed her, shouting and talking but she did not hear anything. This was going to be a good year.

Then, into her frame of sight, which had narrowed onto James, a new figure entered. Blonde, beautiful and flawless, Clarabelle Angie appeared and wrapped her thin, sun-kissed arms around James. She tiptoed up and for, but a moment, James grinned, before leaning forward to kiss her.

And someone might as well have walked by and punched Alicia in the stomach, knocking the wind out of her because that is what this felt like.

  James and Clarabelle.

  Clarabelle and James.

Jane appeared at her side, out of breath and carrying a huge suitcase behind her.

“I told you to come help me!” she protested as she saw Alicia standing idly and staring at the space in front of her.

“What? Oh –” Alicia tore her eyes away from James and turned to greet her friend. Jane didn’t notice that the wind seemed to have been knocked out of her friend and excitedly told her about the latest gossip. She then moved up, dragging her bag in the direction of her dorm with promises to come back moments later to Alicia.

  Clarabelle and James.

  Together.

This was not going to be a good year. At all.

  Chapter One

Clarabelle was not the kind of girl who ever held back from what she wanted. She prided herself on that quality. It takes a strong woman to never hold back. Clarabelle had many boyfriends over the years, but she had never had a, well, proper one. She had been careful to make sure that every boy knew they were one among many and that she was not attached. But now, she was going to try something different. Monogamy was a strange concept to her, but with James, it seemed exciting.

Clarabelle was the epitome of beauty. She was slim and petite with cropped blonde hair and a slim neck. Busty and attractive, she took great care to dress in a manner which emphasized these characteristic; she was proud of her body and extremely confident. She was also unashamed of her sexual desire and had enjoyed having several men in her life at the same time. She did not think she was doing anything wrong since she never lied; she made sure every man in her life had known he was temporary and one in many. Over the years, these things had earned her several offensive names, but she had learned not to care.

She was finally going to settle down, though. She had finally met a person with whom she wouldn’t feel like she is missing out on the rest of the opportunities out there. James Carter was a lot like her in several ways. He had a past similar to hers and a series of women strung to him through the course of his adolescence though none that he had openly introduced as his girlfriend. He was handsome and tall with messy black hair and hazel eyes. When he grinned at her, it made her stomach flip. Monogamy, or settling down, was new to both of them.

Her boyfriend. The word sounded strange on her lips, yet it made her ecstatic. Is this what love felt like?

  There wa
s only one problem. Paige Price. Clarabelle’s childhood best friend. They grew up together, went to high school together and chose to purposefully attend the same college. Sweet old Paige was the only person in the whole university who did not judge Clarabelle on her actions. And Paige had been in love with James Carter ever since their first day of college.

Paige and Clarabelle were as different as two friends could be. Paige was a simple and plain looking girl who never got much attention from boys. The fact that her best friend Clarabelle was lovely and beautiful lowered the prospects of male attention even more since all eyes always fell on Clarabelle. Paige was slightly overweight with mouse brown hair. She did not have Clarabelle’s smooth and clear skin, neither her confidence and dominant demeanor. She was shy and easy to overlook most of the time. When Clarabelle had held back from James initially, it was only because of Paige. Every time she wanted to make the first move on him, the thought of sweet Paige stopped her. But then she told herself that Paige was never going to get James anyway and it had been three years; if she had wanted to do something, she should have mustered up the courage by now. Those thoughts led Clarabelle to make her first move.

Presently, she looked around for Paige. She was a little worried about what to expect. Paige had been away on holiday when Clarabelle called her to relay her news of her new relationship. Paige had responded calmly and told Clarabelle she was happy for her. But she did not buy it; she knew her best friend of more than two decades enough to realize when she was being honest and when she was faking it.

Presently, Clarabelle sat in her dorm room, staring out of the window and waiting for Paige, who was also her roommate, to arrive. The view outside was beautiful, and Clarabelle was anxious to return to James, but first, she must meet Paige.

The door opened and a girl that Clarabelle did not recognize instantly entered the room. When the realization hit, Clarabelle squealed in delight.

  “Oh my god, Paige!”

Paige Mumps smiled at her, but it was a smile of years gone by. She had had her teeth whitened and straightened, and it looked like she had finally become serious about her skin regime since it was clear and smooth now. She wore makeup too – something she never normally did – and her skin was tan. She had lost at least 5 kilograms and looked slim and curvy now.

“Oh my god!” Clarabelle repeated, looking her friend up and down in disbelief. “You’re so – so tan! And I know you said you were on a diet, but you’re so skinny now! Paigy, you look beautiful!”

  “I know,” squealed Paige.

“Sit down,” Clarabelle said. “You have to explain all this to me!”

“There’s not much to explain,” Paige said breezily. “I’ve been on a diet all summer – I told you that – and I took this wonderful herbal medicine for my skin. You should try it, Bella. It’s brilliant.”

Clarabelle raised her eyebrows. “You know I don’t…use things like that.” Clarabelle prided her own lovely skin and credited it to her healthy vegetarian diet and morning meditation.

“Oh right,” Paige said vaguely. “Well, anyway – I had my hair and nails done around three weeks ago and… here I am!” She beamed.

Clarabelle was at a loss for words.

“Bella, you won’t believe what has happened to me this past month. Everything has changed! But enough about me. What about you? I guess things have changed for you too!”

“Yeah,” Clarabelle said a little anxiously. “I was a little worried about that, actually.”

“The fact that you’re dating James Carter?”

  “I didn’t want to hurt you, Paigy… I know you’ve had a bit of a crush on him –”

But Paige cut across her. “Never mind, Bella. I’ve known James for as long as you have and I’ve never done anything about my little crush. You had the opportunity and you took it. I can’t blame you for that.”

“So – so you’re not angry?”

“Not at all!” Paige beamed again. She seemed to be doing that a lot. “Come on then – I want you to show me off to the whole world.” She stood up, and Clarabelle imitated her. Paige looped an arm through hers and led her outside where the sounds of excited new arrivals were loud and clear. “Now that you’re in a relationship Bella, I’ll have to be the new you.”

Clarabelle smiled weakly but did not respond. Paige Price the new Clarabelle Angie? Not likely. Paige might have changed her appearance, but she will be the same old girl who cannot utter a word in front of a good-looking boy. Or so she thought.

  Chapter Two

It had been a quiet summer evening, and James had shown up at Alicia’s house, claiming that he had been around the neighborhood and wanted to say hello. He had been charming in front of her mother who had taken a liking to him immediately. James was leaving for a family holiday soon, so he had been in the neighborhood to meet his best friend Blake Stanley who lived nearby. Alicia had suggested that she takes James out to eat at a fancy restaurant nearby since her mother was going to have guests over soon. James had complied, and they both left. After dinner, they ended up staying late, drinking at a bar and when James walked her back home, she was slightly tipsy.

“Your mother won’t appreciate me as much as she did earlier,” James had joked. “She’ll think I got her daughter drunk.”

“I’m NOT drunk,” Alicia had giggled.

“I’ll take that before you drop it,” James had said, taking her cell phone from her hands which she had been waving around.

“I won’t drop it!” Alicia had protested. “I’m completely fine!”

It was almost eleven o clock, and they had now reached her front door. Alicia was trying to snatch her cell phone back, and James was watching in amusement as he held it over his head and Alicia was unable to reach it because of their height difference. James lowered his hand slightly, and Alicia grabbed it, snatching her cell phone back and laughing victoriously. James laughed too. Then he realized that she was standing too close to him and she still held his hand in hers. They were so close that he could count the freckles on her skin. Her golden-green eyes looked up into his hazel ones, and her grip on his hand tightened. Their inhibitions were compromised as they both edged closed, James leaning down and Alicia tip toe-ing up. And they were so close that he could feel her breath. She tilted her head slightly, and her eyelids drooped.

“We’re drunk!” she said suddenly. Quickly, she had let go of his hand and backed away. Her eyes were wide, and she looked panicked. “I’m so sorry!” she said. Her voice had been unnaturally high. “I – I’m sorry, James.”

“No no, it’s fine,” James had replied, shaking his head to clear it. “I mean you’re right. Obviously. We’re drunk.”

  “I m-m-mean, I wasn’t thinking –”

“I should probably go,” James cut across her.

“Yeah, you should,” Alicia had replied. “I mean you don’t have to, but since it’s late, you probably want to…”

“Alicia, calm down. Nothing – you know –”

“Happened,” she finished for him. “You’re right.”

  “I’ll leave now.”

  “Okay.”

He turned to go, but Alicia called out his name again.

“Alicia, calm down,” he said. “Like you said, we’re drunk.”

  “Right.”

And then he left as fast as he could.

“James!” a voice cut into his thoughts.

  “What?” James said distractedly.

“It’s time to go,” Liam said impatiently. “Blake is waiting.”

  “Okay.”

Liam impatiently waited as James put on his coat. Of the three friends, Liam was the sensible one who kept the other two in check. A model student and top of his class, he was the son every parent would want. James and Blake weren’t far behind; they each were brilliant in classes too but did not spend as much time and energy on it as Liam did. They liked to believe it came naturally. Blake was the heartthrob of the University; tall, dark and handsome with wavy
hair that fell to his neck, every girl swooned at the sight of him. He was also the most troublesome of the three, always coming up with new ideas which could possibly get them all killed. James usually went along with it, even encouraged it but Liam was always there to play his part.

  “You seem distracted,” Liam noted.

“He’s thinking about his extremely hot girlfriend,” Blake suggested as they joined him at the entrance and the three boys started to walk.

  “Angie.”

  “She prefers Clarabelle,” James corrected.

  “I prefer Angie,” Liam retorted.

They walked in silence at length before Liam spoke up again. “I met Alicia.”

  “Okay…” James answered.

  “You haven’t told her then.”

“Told her what?” James tried to play dumb.

“About your hot new girlfriend,” Blake supplied.

James quickened his pace so that he was walking ahead of his two friends. “I don’t know why you two are so fixed on me telling Alicia about Clarabelle. It’s not like it’s an obligation.”

“No, but everyone knows you and Alicia have a – a history…” Liam replied.

“No, Alicia and I do not have a history. I have a history, but Alicia does not as was made very clear the other night –”

  “You almost kissed!” Blake protested.

  “Functional word being almost.”

“You went all the way to the other city just to spend the day with her. And don’t kid me, Blake wasn’t in town, and you knew that. Don’t tell me that means nothing.”

“It’s not like that! I told you. Clarabelle and I are going to have a go at a relationship, and I’m not going to…”

“No, no, no,” Liam cut across him. “That’s not it.”

“We just want to know why Clarabelle and why now?” Blake asked. “Is it because she’s really hot and kind of slutty?”

“Shut up, Blake,” James said rolling his eyes.

“Hang on,” Liam said. “Blake didn’t mean anything by that.” He grabbed James’ arm to make his stop walking, and the three boys stood facing each other. “He just meant…now that Alicia is actually warming up to you…”
