I’ll own your tears, and when I do, I’ll own your soul…
A mirthless smile twisted his lips. How easily she remembered only that which she wanted to remember.
He looked at the table that held the wooden box. Inside it rested the tears he had shed when he had wiped her mind of the memories of her family. Destructive, brutal memories laid in place by his own blood, a descendant of his brother. Weak, ineffectual, Duncan had been more than willing to see his older brother cast out, branded a demon and cursed to never know peace or true love should he survive the death his parents had ordered for him.
Damn them all! He moved quickly from the bed to stand at the opened window, staring into dawn’s awakening as he pushed the fury back, pushed back everything but the connection he felt to his wife.
He snorted at that thought. His wife. Perhaps, for a few blissful days, he had known the joy of her acceptance, her false love. Aye, he had stolen her memories, had unintentionally dimmed the power she possessed and through his own pain, had stolen her will. He would have made it easy for her then. He would have lessened the pain and the fight he knew he would have from her if he hadn’t done so. Because she was his wife. And what belonged to the Wizard, by God stayed the Wizard’s. And this, she would soon realize.
“Come on, Caitlin.” He sent the words into the early morning mists, knowing it would not take long for them to reach her. “Take my tears if you can…”
