  Copies

I should have known better. Mamma didn’t raise no dummy. At least that’s what I always told myself before, but there I was, standing in the copy room, pressed tight against it, with my boss, Mr. Cryborn’s palm greedily groping my ass. His large black man’s penis pressed into my side as he massaged my buttocks with his palm, breathing heavily into my ear.

“You like this?” he asked me.

I wanted to tell him no. I wanted to leave the room, but I couldn’t. I agreed to it. It’s true I didn’t really realize what I was agreeing to, but I did consent.

“Do you like being the Office Perk? Do you like being a naughty girl?”

He leaned in and licked my neck and a moan escaped my lips. Office Perk. The words echoed through my lizard brain. Naughty . I shouldn’t like it, but I did. It made my stomach purr and another moan slipped through me.

It made me angry that the noise pushed through my own vocal chords, despite my fighting against it, but those words. Those two damned words made my stomach clamp every time. ‘Naughty girl’. Yes, I am a naughty girl . My husband never treated me with anything but respect. He made love to me. He always stared into my eyes and humped into me slowly and lovingly, while I imagined other men taking me, ravaging my body with lusty greed. He would look into my eyes to peer into my soul and I used to do the same—for a while, but it became to repetitive. I hungered for more, so I pretended that he wanted me give my pussy to other men. In my mind, I had his permission to cheat on him. I know I was probably just justifying the fact that I wasn’t faithful. I know I was probably consoling my own guilt for having sex behind his back, but I guess it worked. Imagining him giving me approval to do the things I was doing, did make me feel better.

Mr. Cryborn must have saw my boredom when he interviewed me. He knew it because I was a server in a bar called ‘The Junkyard’. The girls there all wore short skirts and my skills with men were the only reason he hired me. I had no previous experience in law. None.

“Yes,” I finally admitted. “I do like it.” It was a half-truth. I liked the attention, but I also craved a little more respect. Apparently, respect wasn’t going to come my way anytime soon.

Mr. Cryborn walked around to the back of me and slid his bulge up and down over my rear end. He slid his hands around me and cupped both of my breasts at the same time. Damn my nipples for responding to his touches. Damn everyone else in the building for not coming in and seeing him do these things to me and damn myself for letting my life go in this direction in the first place. He wasn’t supposed to be doing this to me. I wanted him to stop, but I wanted him to keep going at the same time. My conflict was like salt covered chocolate. I was the salt. He was the chocolate. Another moan fluttered through my lips.

“My wife would kill me if she knew I hired you. She’d take everything I own if she knew why.” He slid his hands down my body after he said it, moving them down to my thighs, lifting my skirt. He bent down behind me and slid his tongue up my thigh and I widened my stance, hoping to feel him licking my sweet spot.

He didn’t. He knew that anyone could walk in at any time. He could lock the copy room door, but if he did, he might as well hang a sign on the door saying that he was fucking his PA. Instead, his tongue retracted and he backed away from me. Once again, stopping just as my juices were beginning to flow.

“Finish the copies I asked you for, check with Mindy to make sure she doesn’t need anything from you and then go see Mr. Bower. I told him you’d copy his files as well.”

So that was it. I knew I wasn’t qualified for much, but apparently, all I was qualified for was making copies? I didn’t mind giving him his ‘perks’ but I was hoping for a little experience in return. Maybe, eventually, I would gain more experience than what his pecker had to offer.

I finished the copies and put them into his inbox. Mindy shook her head at me as I approached her desk to find out if she needed anything.

“What?” I asked her, knowing she was judging me.

“Nothing, dear,” she said. At fifty-something she was still attractive, but I knew I didn’t want to be her when I reached her age. She was skilled in her profession. She knew her job as well as anyone could and yet, it was as if she forgot who she was as a woman. She was stuffy and stiff—a real no-nonsense woman who should have the word boring tattooed on her forehead. I didn’t envy her at all.

“Say it. You might as well. It’s written all over your face.”

She puffed air through her pursed lips as if trying to shoot me down with the blast. “Fine. I think you could be a little more discreet. Screw your way to the top if that’s the only way you can get there, but fix your hair before you come back into the office.” Her icy blue eyes drilled into me and she added, “please,” onto the sentence as if that made her words less painful.

“It is the only way I can get there. We both know I don’t belong here. But I’m here. I got here the only way I could get here. I’ll take your advice, though. I didn’t realize my hair was mussed.”

“Is this really what you want, dear?” she asked me. Her tone softened a little but her words were still sharp. “To let men use you like that, just to get somewhere?”

“Are you trying to tell me that you’ve never even thought about it, Mindy? I mean come on. You’re cunny can’t be that dry, is it? Black men are hung like mules and they feel amazing.”

She shifted in her cozy office chair. She pushed her knees together letting me know that the idea had crossed her mind before.

“I would never do what you are doing. Mark my words, missy. This will not end well for you. It’s only a matter of time before the wall in your cute little world comes crashing down. Mark my words.”

This will not end well for you, missy. Mark my words.

I marked her words as I walked the hall toward Mr. Bower’s office. I marked them, but probably not in the way that she intended for me to mark them. I marked them as a challenge, knowing that if I followed a rabbit down its path, the very same wolf as the rabbit I was following, would eat me. Were things ending well for Mindy? Maybe. Maybe not. Either way, she didn’t look happy, so if that were ending well, I’d rather chance a different wolf. A wolf that mated with rabbits, instead of eating them.

The snake pit was as busy as alwa
ys. The snake pit was a large open part of the office building where all of the interns did their work. It was sectioned off into 15 cubicle, each supplied with a computer terminal with internet, a desk, pens, legal pads and various other office supplies. The young wanna-be vipers all worked their tails off, trying to make a name for themselves. I hated passing by the snake pit, but I was ogled with every passing. Being ogled by partners was one thing. Interns were another thing entirely.

Mr. Bower’s door was wide open. He was the only white lawyer working for the Detroit-based firm. I guessed his age at fifty-five or so, which didn’t make him the oldest partner, but he wasn’t far from it. I never talked to him much, because he seemed as stuffy as Mindy. He was very serious—serious to the point that he was almost scary. Every time I did speak with him, I felt like I was ten. I stopped at the lavatory and fixed my hair. Mindy was exaggerating, of course. My hair wasn’t bad, but she had a point. It wasn’t perfect. I fixed it and moved on.

I reached in and knocked softly on his door. His face was pointed down, directed toward a pile of files. Without looking up, he reached his hand forward and waved me in, so I walked in and stood in front of his desk.

I stood silently as I waited for him to address me. One of the first things I learned while working for the firm was that even if I was invited into a partner’s office, I shouldn’t speak until spoken to. I learned that the hard way. I didn’t want a repeat of the experience. Lawyers have a way of winning their case, even when they aren’t in court.

Mr. Bower finally looked up and his eyes grew on his face, before he finally regained control of himself.

“For the life of me, I can’t figure out what the hell is going through Garnon’s head.”

“Excuse me, sir?” I asked him. I knew what he meant because he was eyeing the length of my skirt and the openness of my blouse—scrutinizing my state of dress.

He shook his head no, waving his hand. “Never mind,” he said. “I guess we’ll deal with the sexual harassment lawsuit once you finally decide to file it.”

“I will do no such thing, sir. I am thankful for the opportunity to work for this firm and I will earn my stripes however is necessary.”

“And you think dressing like that is necessary.”

“I’m following orders, sir. I do whatever I’m told, without exception.”

He chuckled. “You should be careful about being such a good soldier, Mrs. Juniper. Garnon might ask you to do things your husband wouldn’t appreciate. You are married, correct?”

“I am married, but my husband doesn’t work here. When I got the job, he told me to do whatever it took to succeed. I plan on following his request to the letter.”

In a way, I was being a smart ass and I knew it. I resented people treating me as if I weren’t old enough to decide whose dick I should or shouldn’t suck. If my boss wanted a polish, I intended to make it shine. As far as I was concerned, that was nobody else’s business.

He gave me a dumbfounded look, folded his hands on his desk in front of him and asked his next question. “And what are you going to do when the day of him asking you to bend over his desk comes, Mrs. Juniper?”

I stepped forward, slid a few things aside on his desk and laid my chest down flat onto it. “Like this, sir?” I said with a smile in my voice.

“Mrs. Juniper! For God’s sake, stand back up!”

“Yes, sir. Sorry, sir,” I said as I snapped back to attention before him. “I thought you were making a request of me, sir.” Inside, I was laughing my ass off. His face was flushed and I was sure he was about an inch away from keeling over.

“Of course I wasn’t making a request! Not like that! I was merely proposing a hypothetical!”

“A hypothetical, sir. My mistake. You won’t be filing a sexual harassment suit against me, will you?” I said, relishing my newly found power over a man who was so used to being in control. Normally, I liked it when a man took control, but only if he did it in the way I wanted him to. Mr. Bower never controlled me the way I wanted anyway, so why not have a little fun.

“For God’s sake no, woman! My wife would never believe that you were the aggressor and neither would the courts! No. We will just consider it a misunderstanding and put this goose on her back.”

  “On her back, sir?”

“Yes, exactly. On her back where she belongs.”

“I understand perfectly sir,” I said. I lowered myself to the floor, laying on my back, opening my legs. “Like this, sir?”

“For living hell, woman!” he said, standing up from his chair. His face was alarmed, but his eyes were pinned to my panties. “You are not the goose to which I was referring! Please! Get up from the floor!”

“Right away, sir,” I said, barely able to contain my laughter.

“Please, Mrs. Juniper! Just make the copies of these files as Garnon promised me you would. My sec … Personal assistant has taken a personal day, but I’m due in court in an hour.”

“Yes, sir,” I said, giving him a salute. I approached his desk again and he cowered away from me as if I were a viper. I winked at him, took the files from his hand and left his office. Laughter greeted me as I passed by the snake pit again, but they weren’t laughing at me, they were laughing with me. It was my first proud moment at the firm. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one intimidated by the old fart. I was given several thumbs up and I smiled back at two of the interns as they high fived each other.

Oops, I thought to myself. I guess that conversation wasn’t as private as I thought.

I passed by the snake pit, doing the best I could to pretend like I had no idea what everyone was laughing about. I wasn’t prepared to acknowledge what just happened. It wasn’t my intention for anyone else to hear it. I made a direct route for the copy room, closed the door behind me and took a minute to catch my breath. I made Mr. Bower’s copies as quickly as I could, but quickly meant almost a half an hour. When they needed copies, it meant copying many pages. I tried to read some of them, but I had no idea what any of the legal speak meant, so I gave up. When the copies were finished, I left the copy room and it felt like everyone was waiting for me to come back out. I had at least ten people staring at me as I shut the door behind me. The sudden realization of my audience caught me off guard and I had to do a double take.

“Do I have something on my face?” I asked as I started walking.

The interns all quickly pretended they weren’t just staring at me and I made my way back to Mr. Bower’s office. He didn’t look up at me as I sat the files and the copies onto his desk.

When I returned to Mr. Brycort’s office, he was leaning against his desk, waiting for me.

“Bravo,” he said. “I see you finally got a handle on Bower.”

I smiled and nodded. News travels fast. “Will there be anything else today, sir. If not, I will see you tomorrow?”

“Actually, yes. I will need you to work late today. Take an hour if you like and be back here at six.”

I blushed a little, knowing there was only one reason he would want me to work late. It meant he was in the mood.

  CHAPTER 2

  When the Mood Strikes

I couldn’t eat much during my hour. I sat at a table just outside of the small café across the street from the firm’s office. I was as much of an outsider looking in during my meal, as I was when I was in the office. Everyone else had an important role to play in the firm’s success. Everyone else was important to helping the clients win whatever case they were filing. I made copies. It was a task anyone could do and the only other role I was serving was eye candy for the interns and lawyers, and an additional reward for the lead partner for the firm.

I finished half a sandwich before it was time to go back into the office. Gathering my courage, I left a small tip and marched across the street. I didn’t mind being Mr. Brycort’s office perk, but I needed him to know that I was doing it for a reason. I wanted a career with his firm. I wanted to contribute to its success. I needed more responsi
bility and I was going to make sure he knew that.

The snake pit was empty by the time I went back in, which was a relief to my bones. I opened the door to Brycort’s office without knocking and headed in with my new purpose in mind. “Mr. Bry…” I began, but he wasn’t alone. Three of the other partners were with him. I didn’t expect that. Normally, when Brycort asked me to ‘work late’ he was alone so he could enjoy his perk.

“Oh, hi,” I said, scanning the other partners. “I’ll come back when you’re finished.”

“Nonsense, Naveah. I was just telling the boys about your conversation with Bower! It was priceless! Absolutely priceless!” Mr. Brycort announced. “Tell us your version, Naveah.”

Brycort and the other three partners watched me eagerly as I fidgeted with my hands in front of me. Shit, I thought to myself. Why didn’t I just keep my damn mouth shut? I no longer felt like I had the upper hand. I ended up embarrassing a partner of the firm and even though I had four partners congratulating me for it, I still felt like it was a mistake.

The three other partners were all up and coming lawyers with their careers ahead of them. They were all educated black men and even though they all carried themselves with a lighter air than their senior partners, they were still serious career minded men who were ferocious lions in court. They weren’t the type of men to be trifled with and their gazes burned into my skin as I stood in the center of them. They were laid back in the leather chairs and couch that sat inside Brycort’s office. Their attentions all focused on the new personal assistant who did nothing else other than look pretty and make copies of files that she didn’t understand.

I knew in that very moment that I was in over my head. Way over my head.

“It was no big deal. Really. I think I should retire for the day. If that’s okay, Mr. Brycort,” I said.

“Relax, Naveah. For the first time since you started, you’ve impressed us all. You’re the first person to ever get that old fart’s goat. You’re the first person to ever rock that man at all. Let us enjoy the moment. Tell us what happened.”
