Throughout this collection, I’ve tried to retain the integrity of Quin’s original text. I’ve corrected spelling, grammatical and typographical errors where they weren’t intended stylistically. The stories are presented more or less in chronological order, except where shared thematic concerns seemed to call for them to be grouped together.
‘Leaving School – XI’ was first published in the London Magazine 4 (July 1966).
‘Nude and Seascape’ is previously unpublished, undated, and from the Fr. Brocard Sewell archive at the Carmelite Friary in East Finchley, London.
‘A Double Room’ is previously unpublished, was written ca. 1966 (as mentioned in the author’s correspondence with Marion Boyars), and is from the private collection of Larry Goodell.
‘Every Cripple Has His Own Way of Walking’ was first published in Nova (December 1966).
‘B.B.’s Second Manifesto’ is from the private collection of Billy Apple and was ghostwritten for Billy Apple, ca. 1962.
‘Untitled (Neh Man It’s Like This)’ is from the private collection of Billy Apple and was also ghostwritten for Billy Apple, ca. 1962.
‘Living in the Present’ (co-written with Robert Sward) was first published in Ambit 34 (1968) and is published here with permission of Robert Sward.
‘Tripticks’ was first published in Ambit 35 (1968).
‘Never Trust a Man Who Bathes With His Fingernails’ was first published in El Corno Emplumado 27 (July 1968).
‘Eyes That Watch Behind the Wind’ was first published in A Signature Anthology (Calder and Boyars, 1975), and was written in 1968.
‘Ghostworm’ was first published in Tak Tak Tak 6 (1993), and was written in 1969.
‘Motherlogue’ was first published in Transatlantic Review 32 (1969), and was written ca. 1969.
‘The Unmapped Country’ is previously unpublished and from the Lilly Library Calder and Boyars Manuscript Collection and the Fr. Brocard Sewell archive. It is unfinished and was written in 1973.
‘One Day in the Life of a Writer’ is previously unpublished, from the private collection of Carol Burns, and has not been dated.
