Walt’s gaze shifted to Lily, who energetically cranked the old ice cream machine. He smiled. The previous week he had located it, where it had been stored in the basement, and brought it upstairs. Joanne had found it sitting on the kitchen table when she came to work the next day and assumed Danielle or Lily had placed it there.
With a sigh, Walt turned from the window and made his way to the attic, a bit resentful of the new outdoor kitchen, which drew everyone outside—a place he could no longer be.
DANIELLE OPENED her eyes and found herself again sitting on the bench in the side yard. Overhead the sky was clear and the sun shining. The guests from Marie’s party were nowhere in sight, yet everything was set up as it had been in the midst of the party, with steaks sizzling on the grill and the ice cream maker filled with freshly churned ice cream.
“Hello,” Walt said when he suddenly appeared, sitting on the bench next to her.
“Hi.” Danielle smiled softly. “I thought for a minute you were going to leave me here all alone.”
“It looks like Marie’s party went well.”
“I wish you could have been there.”
Walt shrugged. “I watched.”
“I’m glad you found the old ice cream maker. It was really a hit. Evan and Eddy especially liked it.”
Walt smiled. He leaned back on the bench. “I’m glad they enjoyed it.”
Danielle turned to Walt, studying him a minute as he stared ahead, seemingly looking across the yard at where the activity had been the previous day. “Do you know what Evan told me?”
Walt turned to Danielle. “What?”
“He said he felt bad because you could never have ice cream again.”
Walt’s solemn gaze settled on Danielle.
“You know, Walt, that’s not necessarily true. You and I both know that when you pass over to the next level, it might be entirely possible to enjoy ice cream again. In fact, I’d be surprised if you couldn’t.”
“I know.”
“Do you ever think about it—about going. About enjoying things like ice cream again?”
Walt smiled. “Someday, Danielle. But for now, there are some things I enjoy far more than ice cream.” He leaned to her and brushed a light kiss over her lips.
