“If they destroy the island…”
“Then the rest of the planet will follow. I know.” Ren needed a break. A month long—no—year long break. Fingers dancing, she willed fire to climb through the lines of her palm. A chilling coolness wafted up through her veins. Sweat beaded on her palm.
Nothing. Nothing came. She bit her cheek and tried again, heart smashing against her ribcage. Was she back at square one? Aka, weak and fucking powerless? She concentrated, searched for the black energy that powered her fire, and felt nothing. Absolutely nothing. Damn, Ekanna was right.
Her gaze flew to Lindiwe. She couldn’t tell the elder. No one could know that she could no longer call the fire.
Fuck.
Ren had to do something. Take the elder’s gaze off of her hand. “I’ll find them again,” Ren said, voice shaking. “Just…give me some time here.”
Lindiwe bowed her head. “I will give you an hour.”
“Fine.”
The elder bowed out of the tent, long braids skipping along the dirt. Ren brought her knees to her chest and hugged them. Was she cut off? Why couldn’t she call the fire anymore? Because of her foolishness and fear the Scions and Shapers…may no longer have their power. How in the hell would they fight the Titans without their power?
One thing at a time. Assuming that everyone else was still alive…she would get to that bridge and cross it when she had to. Until then, she had to concentrate on finding them.
She had to retrace her steps.
