“He’ll go away. Stay where you are.”

“Ma wants to know what Danielle wants for breakfast,” Dean screams through the closed door. The look she gives me is priceless as she searches my face for signs that Dean is really doing Ma’s bidding. She’s already getting a sense of what life is like on the farm with my brothers.

“You’re being initiated, babe,” I whisper to her and nibble her ear. I told her to keep that sassy mouth in check. I’m also thrilled that the boys like her enough to give her shit. She quirks her eyebrows at me hinting that she’s got this handled. I shake my head at her, warning her not to get involved.

“Hey, Dean?” She calls out. I try to cover her mouth with my hand but she pries it off with a laugh. He answers her with a chuckle, obviously impressed that she would try playing his game. “Tell your mom bacon and eggs are perfect. And have her please set an extra place at the table because I’ve invited Hannah.” She winks at me and I renew my head shaking.

“Huh?” Dean says and we note the sizeable pause before he thinks of something else to say. “How do you know Hannah?” Hannah is Dean’s crush and has been since he was thirteen, which is about as old as his voice sounds now as it cracks with embarrassment.

“There’s a lot you don’t know about me yet, Dean.” She’s just kicked the hornets’ nest. “Careful who you play games with.” We wait to see if there’s a response but there isn’t one although we know he’s still standing outside the door.

“Goodnight, Dean!” I call out. A few seconds later we hear the crunching of gravel as he walks away.

“Oh, Danielle,” I say with a warning tone. “You’re in for it now!” I capture her lips in a fearsome kiss. “I better get what I can out of you tonight because tomorrow you are going to be docile like a cat in the summer sun.”

“Like hell I am!” She counters. “You think one measly attempt by your little brother to scare me is going to send me scurrying away? Puh-lease!” She throws her hat back on the table now that the threat has disappeared. “I’ve been living with riggers for the last six years. That little country-bumpkin has nothing on me.”

“I knew all along you were the right one to bring home.” I lean across her for a kiss but she pulls away to prevent me from getting any closer.

“What do you mean ‘the right one’? There were others to choose from?”

“No, babe.” I concede. “There was only ever you.”
