That pot of soup she’d made for dinner last night was going into the trash. Someone at the market had to have given her some bad mushrooms or something, because she’d just hallucinated for the first time in her life. What a trip.
Paige turned toward the barn. Casper needed breakfast before she dumped out her leftover veggie soup. Then she could head in to town a little early. Some time in the kitchen would help clear her head.

Hey there, it’s Kyle. Chef at the Silver Spring Ranch outside Stanford, Colorado. In the middle of the story you’ve just read (in which I meet my beautiful Jamie), I make breakfast. The star of my breakfasts is always the same. Better than sex potatoes. Trust me, these wooed Jamie more than my big, strapping good looks, and more than even Mattie’s secret spices… or magick.
One warning only. If you make these for your sweetheart when you wake up from a night of great sex, don’t be surprised if you’re naked in a matter of minutes. Make sure you turn off the stove first…
KYLE’S BETTER-THAN-SEX POTATOES
4 baked potatoes (use russets)
4 T. good, salted butter (I recommend Kerrigold)
4 sprigs fresh rosemary (best if it’s fresh-picked)
Salt and pepper to taste
In a big skillet, heat the butter slowly, adding pepper to the butter once it starts to pool (requires low heat at first). Cut the (already-baked) potatoes in half and then into ¼ slices. Add potatoes to the butter and begin to fry them. Once you’ve added the potatoes, increase the heat just a bit (no higher than medium high—higher heat is the biggest amateur mistake, as a rule, when cooking) and allow them to brown up. Add pepper, and a touch of salt.
Pull the rosemary leaves off the sprig and add them to the skillet (chop further if you’d like—just make sure not to add the woody stem), and add a bit more pepper and salt. Continue to fry the potatoes until they crisp up and the rosemary is fragrant.
Serve and eat. And, like I said, make sure you turn off the stove.
