Her friend patted her on the shoulder. “Hey, is everything okay?”
“Yes, sorry. Just got a bit lost there for a moment.”
James held up the second-place trophy for best sauce. Mack held up the second-place trophy for best beef, and the men all cheered.
Shorty pumped his arm. “That’s what I’m talking about. We step out the first time, and we’re pulling the silver fucking medal. Brownstone Agency represents.”
Trey frowned and shook his head. “You satisfied with that?”
“What the fuck you talking about, Trey? I thought we was gonna come out here and get our asses handed to us, and instead, we rolling with the big boys, and they all be like, ‘Oh, fuck, Brownstone Agency is here, we better run.” Shorty snorted. “We got second this time, and we’re gonna get first next time, easy.”
The other snorted. “We didn’t get shit in chicken. How the fuck did we screw up chicken? That shit’s easier than beef.”
Mack chuckled and shook his head. “Shorty’s right. I didn’t come here thinking we were even gonna place, so I’m just happy we got anything.”
The other men all nodded their agreement, and Trey sighed and shrugged.
James rested the sauce trophy on his shoulder. “I agree with Mack and Shorty. All I have to say to you all is that we might know how to bring in bounties, but barbeque is a whole different level of difficulty.”

After the absolute blast that Alison Brownstone was to create, it was REALLY tempting to do another follow up. However, we have been juggling three (3) series (Brownstone, Shay, and Alison in School) and I can’t say that those of us working on these projects think that was such a great idea after all of the headaches it causes.
So, I indulged myself just a little bit and had Alison in the front of this story, and then sent her off to school. But, I am looking forward to the Alison Brownstone project(s) that we will be doing later this year / early 2019.
In this book, I wanted to provide a few fans what they have been waiting for, a balls-to-the-wall type of book. Not much in the way of growth (we touch on it, but hey, that’s between all the destruction.) Further, Shay gets a taste of Brownstone’s possessiveness.
He is fully capable of allowing her to go charging in, and has on many occasions. However, sometimes he intends the fight to be just him and the asshole he intends to obliterate.
The Dog, Mike. The Dog…
So, I was talking with Martha Carr about a new project (The Daniel Codex), and she mentioned that there is a nod to The Unbelievable Mr. Brownstone in that someone beating up a dog gets their ass handed to them.
The dog lives.
I have no idea how many readers I lost with the murder of James’ dog (Leeroy) in book one, but I have received a few comments about it. I personally feel that it was an appropriate death in the book, and helped propel James into an all-out piss-him-off mode that started us down this path where eventually, James adopts a daughter and looks like he might have a full-time woman (wife?) in his future.
Maybe.
Going back to his dog Leeroy, Martha (and others) were warning me that I was going to kill the series right there. Fortunately, you readers forgave me the death of the dog and stayed with me.
I’ve been thinking about getting James a new dog, now that he has a better home life.
What do you think, do we chance James getting another dog, and if so, what kind? I read reviews, Facebook groups and other places if you want to get the suggestions to me. The ONLY dog I can think he will not get…
…is a Chihuahua.
