Freefall Page 24

“Are you really sure you want to go to church with my folks?” Amy asked hesitantly. “You’ll probably be asked about a hundred times how you survived falling out of a helicopter.”

Brent’s grin widened. “You know, falling out of that helicopter was probably the best decision I ever made.”

  “Oh, really?” Amy’s eyebrows lifted.

“It gave me the chance to get to know you, didn’t it?” Brent reached for her hand and pulled her closer. “By the way, I got you something.”

Amy’s eyes widened when Brent pulled a ring box from his pocket and settled it in the palm of his hand. “If you don’t like it, we can pick out something else.” Then he flipped open the top, revealing a gold band with a single tear-shaped diamond.

“It’s perfect,” Amy managed, watching as he pulled it from the box and slipped it onto her finger.

“So are you.” Brent kissed her hand and then slipped an arm around her waist. “I love you.”

“I love you, too.” Amy smiled, reaching up to kiss him.

They both ignored the sound of the front door swinging open. Neither of them could miss the humor in Jim’s voice when he called out to Brent.

“Kiss my daughter later, Lieutenant. We’re going to be late for church.”

  Brent just grinned. “Yes, sir.”
