  “Yes, ma’am, Ms. No-longer-a-Cadet-but-still-a-student-for-the-next-three-months-Full-Commander Rachel Katz, ma’am,” Chris grinned slightly as he acknowledged her promotion. “Except it seems to me you don’t mind so much when we’re off duty any more, ma’am.”

  “Why, you little—”

  There was a twinkle in her eye as she pounced on him, determined to forcibly get him out of bed and on to classes in time. And there was a twinkle in his, too, as he continued to tease her... at least until she employed her newest persuasive tactic of tickling him awake. Then, he was laughing too hard to keep his eyes open at all, and trying to retaliate without being able to see was proving something of a challenge.

  Schubert left silently, doors swishing behind him. Some things were too private to interrupt. He grinned to himself as he walked toward class and thanked God they were all still alive.
