Billionaire Biker's Secret Baby_A Bad Boy Romantic Suspense Page 43

by Weston Parker

Brent pushes a finger into his ear to tap an earpiece and begins speaking. “Security to the kitchen. It’s time to take out the trash.”

I take a big gulp of air. Brent just admitted everything, and I have the proof. It’s time to get it to the police, hopefully in time for them to stop Brent from doing whatever he’s about to do.

On my cell phone, I begin dialing the state police as my mother wanders into the room. “What are you doing, girl?”

“Shhh,” I say, trying to learn the security interface as quickly as I can. The phone is answered, and I ask to be connected to a superior as quickly as possible. The officer who answers asks me what it’s in regards to. “Brent Craven, the guy who ran Craven Industries, is about to kill his brother and admitted it on video. I have the video.”

  “Please hold.”

By the time the police captain gets on the line, I’ve figured out how to clip the video and send the segment by email. I ask the captain what his address is and then zip the file to him while explaining what’s happening at the Craven estate.

“I got the file,” he says, then watches it while I stay on the line. “I’m sending out several units, immediately,” he says after a few moments.

Falling back against the couch, I breathe a sigh of relief. “Please, hurry,” I beg him, and he takes my number and promises to be in touch. Then he’s gone.

“Sabrina, what the hell is going on?”

“Oh, Mom,” I say, standing up and running into her arms. “I’m so afraid.” It only takes a few minutes to explain the most salient points, and soon my mother is as upset as I am.

“What’s happening to him?” she whispers. I wish I knew.

It seems like hours go by, but it’s only minutes creeping forward. Questions besiege my brain. Will the cops get there in time? Will they arrest Brent and his men before he hurts Ax? Or will they find the man I love dead?

I can’t help the tears that tumble down my cheeks. Finally, it really is an hour, and then two. “I can’t take this anymore,” I say, pacing the living room. “I’m going over there. I need to know.”

“You can’t,” my mom says. “It’s too dangerous.”

“I don’t care!” Grabbing the keys to the old pickup, I throw open the door. And there, on my doorstep, is Ax.

His face is bruised, his clothing bloody. But he’s alive.

I throw myself into his arms, and he catches me. I’m sobbing, but I don’t care. “You’re here. I can’t believe you’re here.”

“I’m here, honey. Please, stop crying.”

“The police got there in time?”

  He nods. “Thanks to you.”

  “What happened to your brother?”

“He’s in custody, along with my stepmother and Chuck.”

“And your father? Is he okay?”

Ax frowns. “He was barely breathing. Leigh doped him up enough to almost put him into a coma. But he’s in the hospital and stable.”

  “Thank God.”

Ax strokes my hair, then brushes the tears off my cheeks. “Nothing is standing in the way of our future anymore. We can finally be a family. If you’re willing to try, that is.”

I shake my head. “I don’t need to try.”

Ax’s face falls, his eyes wide with shock. Then I kiss him, gently, and giggle. “I already know we are a family. You, me, and Lex.”

Ax crushes me to him, kissing me passionately. At long last, I have the family I’ve dreamed about, with a man who wants that family as badly as I do.

Together, there’s nothing the three of us can’t do.

  Six Months Later

It has been a long six months, but life was on the up and up. Ax was able to clear his criminal record thanks to the records on Brent. It was a miracle, but one we are grateful for. I’d been able to move into being a full time mom, which was tough at first, but the joy of my life once I sank down into the responsibility.

Everyone involved in our drama was behind bars. Where they should be. And we are free.

“Lex, please take those balloons outside. You can fill them up with water if you want.”

“All right!” she yells, then motions for the three other girls she’s playing with to follow her out into the backyard.

“Just don’t throw them at your grandma!” I yell after them.

It’s been six months since that night at the Craven estate, and things have changed more than I ever thought possible. For one, Lex has friends, good friends, not ones that shove her into the dirt.

The knowledge of what Brent Craven did roiled the town. Ax went from pariah in the minds of many people to a hero who could do no wrong. My own reputation was elevated as well, and Lex suddenly became one of the most popular kids in her school. The world is crazy sometimes, but at least, for now, it’s crazy in a good way.

My husband walks into the room and fixes me with a smile. That’s right, my sexy, handsome, and somehow extremely wealthy husband, Alexander Craven, is helping me load the dishwasher in my mother’s rundown ranch house.

It’s Thursday, which means it’s the afternoon we spend visiting my mother. Ax offered to move her into a nicer place, but she told him she’s lived here so long, she’s afraid of getting lost in some big, new house. I have to admit, I’m glad she stayed. It’s nice to remember where I come from, now that I’m filthy rich.

When Brent’s crimes were revealed, there was a major shakeup on the board of Craven Industries. Christopher Craven attempted to return, and with the shares Ax bought when he was trying to frame Brent for insider trading, they own a majority stake once Brent’s assets were liquidated. But Mr. Craven’s heart wasn’t in running his empire anymore. The betrayal of his young wife stung him, and work wasn’t enough to fill the hole anymore.

Christopher suggested to the board that his elder son take over the CEO role. Although Ax turned down an education in business, it turns out he has quite a knack for it. However, he’s decided to take a more hands-off role, instead hiring good people to help the share price continue to rise. Instead of working long hours, Ax has been concentrating on building a relationship with his daughter and mending the one with his father.

Something that has helped Ax’s father to recover is spending time with his son and granddaughter. It almost makes up for having an ex-wife and a son in prison, I suppose.

“Did you talk to Luke?” I ask Ax as I stir the sauce simmering on the stove.

“Yeah. I told him about the law firm we hired to try to get him out.” Although the charges related to Leigh’s fake rape allegations were dismissed, it turns out Luke already had a warrant out for his arrest. Due to his priors and the severity of the crime he was accused of, he’s been sent to Tabor Correctional. Ax is doing all he can to help get the former mercenary out. He’s even sent money to Luke’s family while Luke is away. “He’s hanging in there.”

Once the dishwasher is emptied, Ax comes up behind me, nuzzling my neck and cupping my belly with his warm hands. “How’s my favorite mommy and baby?” he asks, his voice so soft and sweet that it makes me tingle.

“We’re doing well, getting ready to eat all the spaghetti in North Carolina.”

“It must be a boy,” he says, running his hands over my swelling stomach. “He’s greedy like his daddy.”

I laugh, and then I feel it. The baby inside me kicks again, and I smile. Ax’s hands freeze, and slowly he turns me around. “I felt that,” he says, awe in his voice.

The baby kicks again, and Ax laughs. “He’s a fighter.”

“Just like his daddy,” I say.

  “Hey, I’m a lover, not a fighter.”

Now it’s my turn to laugh. “If you say so.”

  “Well, I certainly love you.”

I stand on tiptoes to press a kiss to his mouth. “I love you too, Ax. Always have and always will.”

“That’s right,” he says gently, his hand still on my belly. “And soon, they’ll be one more
Craven to love.”

When he pulls me into his arms, I realize how lucky I am. I get to spend the rest of my life with my high school sweetheart, and the family we’ve made. Even if Ax wasn’t worth billions of dollars, I’d still be the richest woman on Earth.
