When the couple turned around to walk into the theater, Alex received the shock of her life.
The time she had spent with him had been incredible. She had known from the start that it would be a transitory affair. Even the searing jealousy she felt now had been anticipated for a while. It had only been a matter of time. But what knocked the wind out of her was the fact that she actually knew the woman he was with right now. And this creature hanging off his arm in such a pathetic fashion was anything but a pretty young thing. Alex and she weren’t friends. Far from it. Not only was she no model or beauty queen, she was probably the very last person Alex expected to see with him. This was a woman who boasted about needing no one, a woman who endlessly ranted to all who would listen that casual affairs were poison.
And here she was, exposing her hypocrisy for all to see! She had usurped Sebastian, this young man who had taught Alex so much, right out from under her. She was no prettier nor more attractive than the last time Alex had seen her. That had been at about the same time last year when Alex, Peter, and a few others had been gathered together by a mutual friend to celebrate this woman’s birthday—her forty-ninth. The shock was so great that Alex was still standing there long after they were gone, her face expressionless. She probably would have stayed there much longer if the young man she had spotted earlier hadn’t come up to her and gently touched her elbow.
“Are you all right?” he asked. Alex didn’t know what to say. She was dazed—but then his lips caught her eye. Full, beautiful, smiling lips. The stranger continued: “It looks like I’ve been stood up. I was going for a coffee, and you look like you could use one. Care to join me?”
This time Alex did know what to say, and all of a sudden, she didn’t really care about that boy any more. What was his name again?
