Xandros did not answer straight away. Always the most articulate of men in both languages, he knew that what he said now was of the utmost importance—so that the subject could be discussed and then put aside for ever. In the past, where all the heartache belonged.
‘This much is true,’ he admitted, seeing her rose-petal mouth pucker. ‘Perhaps it would have pleased us both more if we had simply met and fallen in love. But we have come through much to attain the happiness we have today, Rebecca—and something hard-fought for is more precious than anything. Because life does not always follow rules, agape mou. Sometimes you have to make up your own in order to create your own fairy tale—and that is more satisfactory. Much more.’ His black eyes gleamed with love as her lips began to curve into a smile. ‘And you still haven’t answered my question. Will you marry me?’
And Rebecca began to smile as she ran across the room towards him and flung her arms around his neck. ‘Of course I’ll marry you, my beloved, darling Xandros.’
As he held her tight Rebecca thought that maybe his twin brother would come to their wedding and she would get to meet him at last. And maybe he and Xandros would bury the hatchet and make their peace. Xandros was right. You could make your own fairy tale happen—and the possibilities were endless.
Best of all, theirs was only just beginning.
