His eyes narrowed dangerously. “Go fuck yourself isn’t a resignation. It’s a declaration and I don’t accept it.”
He cupped her face, stroked her cheeks with his thumbs, and she allowed it. Why? Masochistic tendencies. And maybe because she wanted to believe him. He did come all this way when he didn’t have to. Maybe his “I love you” was more than three words he’d tossed out and forgotten. Maybe Erica had kissed him, she thought basking in his touch.
“Erica was in a bad way. She’d just found out her father died and I hugged her offering comfort. Next thing I knew she was kissing me. I was about to push her away when you walked in.”
Calista laughed, couldn’t help it. Finding humor in the absurd was key to maintaining her sanity.
Julius dropped his hands and stared at her as if she was cold-blooded and crazy. “Her father died, and you find that humorous?” he asked full of righteous indignation.
“No.” Calista shook her head. “Death is not funny. I mourn for her. I mourn with her.” She snickered at his puzzlement, then decided to let him in on the joke. “Funny coincidence, my father died too, and I was coming to you for comfort, but your arms and your lips were occupied.”
Startled, Julius frowned and shook his head. “Calista your father is dead. Your records indicated he’s dead,” he said carefully.
“Dead to me and legally dead are too different things.” She stepped across the threshold, then blocked the doorway, preventing him from following.
His puzzlement continued, probably because he didn’t know what to say. He hadn’t prepared for this right hook. “Calista, I’m sorry about your father.”
“I’m not,” she snapped. “My father was a sonofabitch who dumped his black maid and biracial child for a younger, whiter model.”
Julius froze. His thoughts practically scrolled across his forehead. She took pity and summed it up for him. It was the least she could do, and it was the last thing she would do for Julius Morgan.
“Erica doesn’t know it. Harvey never told her about me.” He reeled back and his eyes almost fell out of his head as he put two plus two together. She laughed, couldn’t help it.
“Calista, I—”
She pressed a finger to her lips, silencing the trivial bullshit because she’d heard more than enough. The conversation was over.
“The woman you were comforting, who’s tongue was down your throat, she’s my sister.”
Calista stepped back and closed the door in his stunned face.
