Drake knew a lot more than he was letting on.
It had to be a coincidence. He was probably following me the other day. That’s what he did. He was a nosy bastard. He probably thought I was staying at the hotel and had driven there first because he was being considerate. That had to be it. I stood up, convinced it was all just a big coincidence.
I rounded the bend and entered the pool area, intent on locking myself in my house and thinking about how screwed I was. Raised voices stopped me and I looked up from my careful study of the stones beneath my feet.
Everyone was gathered around the pool, but they weren’t dressed in swimsuits. Faces were somber, others were optimistic looking. Brandon was at the center of it all with of all people, Persephone, at his side.
“Nice of you to join us,” she said as I clumsily joined the group. Curious as to what was happening.
“And you’re looking so lovely,” she said with a smile. I knew she was lying. I looked a mess. Comfortable, but a mess.
“What’s going on?” I asked, looking at my friends and co-workers around me.
“Brandon’s getting a promotion,” Persephone cooed. “Isn’t that wonderful?” She patted him on the back, not even noticing his face was pulled in a frown.
“What–what does that mean?” Brandon’s eyes met mine and they looked worried. For himself? For me?
“That means, Cassandra, you’re getting a new boss.” Her smile stretched from ear to ear.
