The Sacrifice of a Hero: Revival Page 11

After a long night of escaping under the bushes, Frayne finally saw a small cottage in the woods.

“We are here, Adeline, we got closer from Campbell, and we are safe now,” Frayne assured Adeline who was behind his back, but she didn’t answer; it was then when he halted his horse and turned around to check on the lady, but she didn’t reply; he shook her shoulders, but her skin looked very pale, Frayne placed his palm over her head to find out that she was burning with fever and with no delay, he dismounted from his horse and after tying it up under a tree, he carried Adeline inside. She was completely wet from sweat. Frayne wouldn’t let her die just the way Rose did; he was determined to help her. He knocked on the cottage with a hand while he placed the other under Adeline’s back, but no one replied. It was then when he pushed the door with one leg and luckily he found a wooden bed in there.

He placed Adeline on the bed; it must have been because of his bite, she was suffering because of him so he had to save her; but first he had to cool her down, her fever was really severe. He took her bodice slowly even though he didn’t cherish the idea of touching a lady while she was unconscious, but he had no choice. Frayne tried to control his need for her blood as he stripped her out of her clothes to her shift and draped her wet garments right in front of the fire he started, then covered her with his cloak and sat right by her side and held her hand, he patted her cheek and remained by her side for the entire night until she finally opened her eyes fluttered open and the first thing she did was to ask him.

“Have we reached my land?” she asked.

“To tell you the truth, we are here, just a few miles to walk,” Frayne replied with a gentle smile above his face.

“Okay, then, we should go and meet my father then,” Adeline begged.

“But you have been so sick, you need some rest before we leave,” Frayne interrupted

“I’m fine, please Frayne,” Adeline insisted.

Frayne approached from her and touched her forehead with the back of his robust hand and luckily the fever was gone,

“Alright, we can go, but you need to eat first, let us see if there is something left in the saddle,” Frayne suggested.

Adeline, still in the bed pulled Frayne’s hand slowly and pressed a gentle kiss on it.

“Thank you Frayne for everything you did to help me,” Adeline said.

The man’s pulse started beating rapidly and he felt his body burning with was fire desire. For a moment, Frayne felt nothing he needed more sliding right by Adeline’s side and lying with her for the rest of his life, but he knew they were running out of time and he couldn’t predict what Samuel could do especially that he didn’t show up yet. Without a further delay, Frayne got out of the cottage while Adeline put on her clothes quickly trying not to imagine what happened when Frayne saw her body naked as he took her clothes off. The latter was getting his horse ready when Adeline got out of the cottage; it was then when his horse reared up all of a sudden down the path as a heavy thud hit him.

Adeline looked around her trying to understand what was going on when she saw Campbell soldiers looking right at her face. They were exactly four, and two of them raised their swords into Frayne’s face. Slowly, Frayne raised his hands to avoid any unexpected attack.

“No need to panic here, I came to escort Lady Adeline Cumberbatch,” Frayne explained.

“Are you Adeline Cumberbatch from the house of the Campbell?” One of the soldiers inquired.

“Yes, I am Adeline, the chief’s daughter,” Adeline quickly answered.

The soldier who was close to her lowered his sword and bowing his head he said.

“Well, if this is the truth, then….” He paused for a moment. Welcome into your land and home, your brother had already told us the story and we have been waiting for your arrival, your father is eager to meet you and everything is ready for the ceremonies to begin,” The soldier explained.

Adeline felt that she could have fallen unconscious from relief, and she just was speechless unable to believe what happened with her,

“Thank you so much, sir, now we can carry on our way to my father, but wait, what celebrations are you talking about?” Adeline asked.

Frayne was watching in silence; he felt a sorrow that he never felt before at learning that his trip with Adeline came to an end.

“Your marriage has been set, my lady, everything is ready, they are just waiting for your arrival,” The soldier added.

A puzzled glance swept Adeline’s face and she frowned while her eyes were hooked to Frayne’s face as if seeking a solution. When Adeline thought that she would be happy when she would get back home, the surprise she had found exceeded any imagination and at the same time, she wasn’t ready to leave Frayne behind. She looked at him and their glances locked as she approached Frayne and kissed him passionately in front of the soldiers.

“But, I cannot marry him, I’m already engaged to this knight who is standing in front of you,” Adeline said with the same braveness she had always have, Frayne was shocked at her behavior, but he couldn’t hide his feelings anymore and he grabbed Adeline behind his back and commented.

“We will accompany you, but you shall know that this woman is only mine, do you understand?” Frayne said loudly, while surprise silenced the rest of the soldiers. At that moment and all of a sudden, a bright light swept the place and surrounded Frayne, it was the call of God Aka, he finally granted him his freedom from being a vampire; everything looked like a dream while Frayne found himself able to open his eyes again and look at the sun; he was human again and nothing could stand between him and his beloved Adeline; everyone watched in awe as Samuel and a huge number of soldiers surrounded the place; it seemed the last Night Watch Knight’s loyal brothers came to rescue him. They raised their voices repeating the Knights’ oath as they usually did and only then could Frayne feel alive again.
