by Cassidy K. O'Connor

She stared at him for a minute before shaking her head. “When shifters find their mate, it’s forever and sometimes when the mate is a human, they take on traits of the shifter. West was a human till he mated with Rook, now he is a wolf, too.”

The look of shock on Koira’s face made it clear how little she knew about their world. “So now I’m going to be a dog?”

Caeden laughed at the look of hope on her face. “It’s too soon to say, I haven’t officially marked you yet as my mate, so I don’t think we can say yet what changes may come. Not everything happens right away either, it could take a few weeks.”

She burst into laughter unexpectedly, Caeden looked at her questioningly. “I just realized your last name is Shepperd but you’re a lab!”

Caeden gave her a droll look, she had no idea how many times he heard that one growing up.

“I’m sorry,” She tried to look apologetic but he could see the laughter in her eyes. “How do you mark me?”

“Remember when we talked about doing it doggy style? Well, I’m going to take you from behind then as I come inside you, I’m going to bite the back of your neck. There will be a tiny mark there showing the world that you are mine.”

Caeden chuckled as he smelled the desire rolling off of her, she obviously liked the sound of that.

“Do you think after you bite me, I might get my full sight back?” Caeden didn’t want to give her false hope but he didn’t want to crush the look on her face either.

“Let’s take it one day at a time and see how it goes.” Tears welled in her eyes as she threw her arms around his neck and kissed him.

“How about we finish this later, when we’re alone.” He kissed the tears from her cheeks and tucked her against his side.

“Is Rook down there?” She glanced up at him.

“Yes, Rook and Brogan are there.”

“Good, I can’t wait to tell him his description of you was terrible, you are so much hotter than he described.” Caeden laughed and kissed the top of her head, he loved her sassiness. “Now how fast do you think you can get rid of everyone so you can show me how doggy style really works?”

  Epilogue

“I still can’t believe you can see again.” Koira’s mother, Carla, stroked her thumb across Koira’s cheek.

“Every morning when I wake up, I’m afraid to open my eyes. I lay there with my lids closed, scared it will all be over and I’ll be in the dark again. Then Caeden is there and kisses me and I realize it doesn’t matter whether I could see or not, I’m happy.” Koira smiled, thinking about her mate and their upcoming nuptials.

“And this is the mark that made all this possible?” Carla stroked the permanent bite mark on the back of her daughter’s neck.

“It’s not a science, but yes, this is likely what helped me heal.” Koira opened the door of the house and stood back, “Now let’s check out your new home.”

Caeden and Koira had bought a house on two acres of land just outside of town. They built a smaller house on the edge of the property for her mom. At first when Koira asked her to move to town, she hesitated. She had lived in Washington most of her life and Koira’s father was buried there.

It only took Caeden flying up there and meeting her for her to agree to the move. She fell in love with him instantly and put in her two weeks’ notice that day.

Barbara helped get her a job as a receptionist at the town vet’s office and decorated her house while they were moving her stuff down.

“I want you to be happy here. Let Caeden and me know if you need anything and we’ll get it for you.” Koira hugged her mom again, thrilled to not only see her face again, but to have her close by as well. “You have taken care of me my whole life, had to do more than any other parent should have to, so now it’s my turn to care for you.”

“Give me grandbabies someday and we’ll call it even.”

Koira blushed at the idea of carrying Caeden’s child. Once they were married, they planned to start a family right away. She still didn’t have the guts to ask him if they would come out as babies or puppies.

“It’s a deal, I think we’re both ready for a really long vacation free of violence.” After that night in the fish market, they found out the man who died was actually a serial killer. He had killed fifteen people along the west coast. If it weren’t for her losing her sight, she never would have been able to smell him. She liked to think that was her purpose, that she was meant to lose her sight in order to stop him.

Now she’d been rewarded, she had her soul mate, her vision, and a future full of love. Caeden took a leave from the force and their honeymoon was going to be four weeks in Europe. She was going to see sights she never thought she would get to and it was all because she was able to see love in her mate’s sight.
