A Forever Love Page 10

“Whatever,” I said it before I could clamp my mouth shut.

Lucy looked over at me, shook her head, and looked back to where Scott was standing.

“I will be here from time to time, but my business and home are in Michigan. I plan to run the company from there. Now that you know a bit about me, I would like to go around the room and have you stand and introduce yourselves and tell me what department you work in. I'm here for a couple of days and would like to get to know the people who work here. We can start on this side.”

He pointed to the right of me. There were a bunch of people in that direction. I hoped that it would get tiring and he would decide we didn't need to finish. Then I could get the hell out of there so I could figure out what I was going to do.

By the time it got to Lucy, I felt like I was going to lose everything I had consumed the few days before. My hands were shaking, and I could barely breathe. I had to find a way out of it.

Lucy stood with a smile on her face.

“My name is Lucy,” she began. “I must say, you look even better in person.”

I could tell she was looking for a reaction out of him. After seeing him plastered all over the place with different women on his arm, I thought he would have at least laughed. If he did, I didn't hear it. She didn't seem pleased and continued.

“I've been here for three years, and I work in the finance department.”

“Thank you, Lucy,” he said in a serious tone. “It's very nice to meet you. I look forward to working with the finance department personally.”

Really, I thought? What a fucking player. How could I have been so stupid? I noticed some of my anger I'd been trying to push deep inside of me those last ten years beginning to creep up a little.

“I'm looking forward to working with you personally as well, Scottie,” she said with a laugh.

I let out a growl at the thought of the two of them together. Over my dead body, I thought.

I was waiting for the next person to go when Lucy so lovingly yanked on my arm for me to stand.

“It's your turn, Carrie,” she said, as she looked down at me.

  Fuck!

That was the moment. I was freaking out inside. Part of me was nervous, and part of me wanted to push everyone aside, walk up to him, grab him by the neck, and shake the shit out of his cheating ass. Instead, I took a deep breath and pushed off the chair to stand up. He was looking down at whatever was on the table in front of him. I saw his hand go to the back of his neck as he rubbed it and shook his head. His eyes were closed.

“My name is Carrie,” I snapped out.

His eyes opened, connected with mine, and I watched them widen more than I had ever seen.

  “I'm from finance.”

I dropped back down down onto my chair.

“Carrie,” I heard my boss snap.

“Excuse me, Carrie was it? Could you please stand,” Scott said in the calmest tone.

That was when I knew that him buying the company was so much worse than me losing my job.
