Wild Game (Wilding Pack Wolves 1) - New Adult Paranormal Romance Page 16

by Alisa Woods

Owen had paced the extent of the Wylderide offices as much as he could stand, and he knew Nova was busy trying to launch her game, but he couldn’t help knocking on her office door and interrupting her.

He poked his head in. “Hey, baby girl, you got a minute?”

She didn’t look up from her screen. “You keep calling me baby girl in the office, and we’re going to have a problem.”

He smirked and came in, closing the door behind him. “The kind of problem that can be solved with my relentless charm and wit?”

She smiled, still not looking up. “The kind that might be forgotten under a barrage of hot kisses.”

So… he wasn’t the only one who hadn’t gotten enough yet. He suspected he never would. He crossed the office in three strides, swerved around the edge of the desk, spun her chair to face him, leaned her chair back and kissed her thoroughly. She was half giggling through the whole thing, and that certainly wouldn’t do.

He snapped her chair back up, hauled her out of it, and hoisted her small body up by hips, walking her back toward the cot she kept shoved off to the side. Definitely time to christen the office.

He had her down on the mattress before she could even start to protest.

“Owen, God!” she said, trying to shove him away from his growling kisses on her neck.

“It’s a little early to start praying my name, baby girl.” He chuckled. “You’ve got to give me a chance to warm you up.”

“Oh. My. God.” She drew out the words. “We are not making love in my office.”

“Not yet.” He slipped a hand under her t-shirt.

She squirmed deliciously underneath him. “You cannot… we can’t, Owen…” She was fighting him so desperately hard, it was both turning him on and making laughter bubble up from deep inside him.

“Well, we certainly can. This weekend is all the proof I need‌—‌” He was cut off by the door flying open.

Nova let out a small shriek, and the guy at the door with the laptop nearly dropped it.

“I… um… I’ll just…” The man was gesturing helplessly, like he was frozen by the embarrassment of finding them tangled up on the cot.

Owen rolled his eyes and heaved himself up from the cot. Nova had already wiggled out from underneath him anyway.

“No! It’s fine. We were just…” Nova was frantically straightening her clothes. “What do have there, Scott?” She pointed to the laptop.

Scott was still frozen in the half-open doorway, mouth working, like he wasn’t sure what to do.

“Come on, man,” Owen said with a dramatic sigh. “You’ve already interrupted us. Make it worth it.”

Scott gave him a nod, and the grim set to his mouth wiped the smile off Owen’s face. The man brought his laptop around to where Nova and Owen could both see. A list of emails and other documents filled the screen. It didn’t mean anything to Owen, but Nova seemed to immediately know what it was.

“Oh, shit.” She held a hand to her mouth in horror.

  “Yeah,” Scott responded.

“Um?” Owen asked, looking between the two of them.

Scott gestured to the screen. “I’ve been searching through the computer we recovered, you know, from the… the scene of the crime.” He was talking about Nova’s kidnapping but obviously didn’t want to call it what it was‌—‌a torture room.

“You mean Tommy Rachet’s computer,” Owen said.

Scott let out a sigh. “Yes. And he’s definitely the one who doxed the Wilding and River packs. Somehow he’d accessed our servers and pulled out all kinds of stuff. There are raw dumps of data all over his computer, and all kinds of private name and addresses show up.”

Owen peered at Nova. “That’s good, right? Now we know he’s the guy.”

“Well, not really.” Scott tapped on the laptop and brought up another screen. One with a video. “This was just uploaded today.”

The frozen start screen was definitely the Wolf Hunter.

“Today?” Nova asked, still looking horrified.

Owen scowled at the screen. “Could it have been recorded earlier and just uploaded now?”

Scott shook his head. “It was a live feed earlier today.” He started playing the video.

“A lot of you have been leaving comments about the latest shifter video,” the Wolf Hunter intoned with his creepy, modulated voice. He had the same mask as the original doxing video, same voice changer. Owen knew Rachet’s videos had a similarly styled mask, but he’d never bothered to change his voice. Something Owen had missed before.

Then a two second loop started to play of a large, white wolf slicing Tommy Rachet to pieces.

  “Oh, shit,” Owen whispered.

“What about the part where I was tortured?” Nova asked, outraged. “Where’s that!”

Owen slipped his arm around her. She shouldn’t have to watch this again. “Shut it off,” he said to Scott.

The man frowned. “There’s just that part in the beginning. You should watch the rest.”

Owen grimaced, but Nova nodded, so he let it go.

The looping stopped, and the Wolf Hunter in his mask returned. “Do you see the danger they present? Do you see why they must be stopped? Use any means necessary, my fellow True Humans, but show the shifters that you are not intimidated by them. Lure them in, use their ways against them, but make them pay for the crimes against humanity they’ve committed.” The Wolf Hunter leaned closer to the camera. “The white wolves are a special danger. You saw what this monster is capable of.”

Nova’s hand found his. The FBI had questioned her and her staff and even Owen, but they couldn’t ID the wolf DNA at the scene of the crime. Owen’s blood. They couldn’t prove he was the one who killed Tommy Rachet, even if it was in self-defense.

The video continued with the Wolf Hunter giving another one of his hate-filled screeds. Owen tapped the screen to end it.

“I’m sorry,” Scott said. “But I thought you’d want to know right away.”

“No, you did good,” Owen said.

Nova nodded her approval as well.

“So what are we going to do?” Scott asked.

Owen could feel the flush of magic, the trust that Scott had from submitting to him, that Owen would lead the way in this crisis. But it wasn’t just a crisis for Nova. Or even Wylderide.

He squeezed Nova a little tighter. “We launch the game. We live our lives. We don’t let this bastard ruin any of that. But, yeah… it’s clear that no Wilding is safe until we stop this guy.”

Scott gave him a nod and retreated with his laptop.

Owen drew Nova into his arms and kissed the top of her head. “He didn’t say anything about you. He’s not targeting you specifically. You and your dad… that was all about Tommy Rachet, and he’s dead now.”

She nodded against his chest, holding him tight. After a moment, she leaned back. “I’m not really worried about myself anymore. I’m worried about every other Wilding out there. And any wolf who falls into this guy’s crosshairs.”

Owen nodded and drew her back. “I know.”

Rachet was dead, but the Wolf Hunter still lived. And how many other Rachets would there be out there, vigilantes who would blame shifters for their inadequate lives and take out their frustrations by hunting down and killing wolves? Owen would do everything he could to protect his new mate and his new pack from the dangers, but there was no doubt…

It was a dangerous time to be a wolf.
