I woke up one sunny morning, Henry still sleeping, to a voicemail on my phone enquiring about prices for a wedding photographer. It was Sunday, so I decided to call them back the next day. I had a coffee date with Dante to discuss a new project at the gallery, and wanted to get some work done before then.
I took Indigo out into the garden, amongst Tabitha’s rose bushes. Rufus, Tabitha’s tiny dachshund came bounding out of the house after us, and Indigo began to giggle as the dog sniffed her nose, little tongue hanging out of its mouth affectionately.
I put my camera up to my eyes. Click, shoot. As I clicked my camera at Indigo, I focussed on nothing but her beautiful face, ignoring the figure silently standing in the corner of the garden. Aggie called to me for breakfast, and as I scooped up Indigo and made my way back to the house, I could feel his eyes boring holes into my back. But I took no notice, climbing the stairs with Rufus nipping at my heels, and shutting the door firmly behind me. It was a beautiful morning to be back in Miller Creek.

Tess McLennan is a musician and instrumental music teacher, living in a quaint country town south of Brisbane, Queensland. She is an avid reader and experienced traveller, and enjoys musical theatre and vintage artefacts. She has been writing since a young age, and Ghosts is her first novel.
