  Research Notes

  Scotland-

In the earlier half of the Middle Ages, Scotland was a melting pot of cultures. Gaels from Ireland migrated to the western coast, while the Picts held the eastern territory. To the south were the British peoples who were influenced by the Romans, and the Angles, which had Germanic roots. The Vikings were very active during this time, settling throughout England as well as Scotland. By the end of the Middle Ages they were all simply one people—the Scots.

At the end of the 13th century, the king of Scotland died, which triggered a mad dash for power amongst those who asserted claims on the crown. When the king of England was asked to help settle the dispute, he forced the Scots to accept him as Lord Paramount of Scotland. This preceded the Scottish Wars of Independence when the Scots sought freedom from the English crown.

  Selkie Mythology-

Selkie mythology originates from the cold northern Celtic territories of Ireland and Scotland and from Viking explorers. Although female selkies are often mentioned in folklore, males are also referred to as handsome, alluring nomads who temped lonely fishermen’s wives.

They would shed their seal skins to take human form. If it was hidden away from them, they couldn’t return to the sea and their true home. Selkie tales are often melancholy stories of lost love, ending in tears and sadness.

  About the Author

Natasha Brown’s active imagination has always been a distraction. When she was a child, the forest outside her home, and books read in the dark past bedtime taught her that exciting worlds are created with dreams and a voice. Once she started writing she couldn’t break the habit. She is likely busy at work now, researching, planning and chatting with her future characters.
