He wasn't sure where they should go, but was determined to leave Sydney for a while. There were too many memories here. Not to mention that anyone Alana Alvarez had known during her life assumed she was dead.
"I don't know, do you?"
"Not sure yet, but I need to ask you something."
"Go ahead,” she said when her shiny eyes met his.
"Are you sure you're all right with your new chance at life?"
She frowned, seemed confused. “What do you mean?"
Matt sighed. He removed his hand from hers, left the warmth of her abdomen to place it on the steering wheel. “Last night you told me there were certain rules you had to stick to."
"If you're asking me how I feel about never seeing my family again, or not being able to slip back into my old life, then the answer is, I'm fine with it.” Her answer seemed rushed. Alana turned her face to look out the passenger side window.
"Are you sure?"
She turned her gaze back to his. “Those were the rules, and I knew them going into this deal. As much as it hurts to never be able to see my parents again, it's the path I chose to take. I just don't understand why the Soul Dealer offered me the opportunity when that bullet was meant for me."
He didn't understand that part either, especially after Cain confirmed his suspicions. But what did it matter now? Nothing that had happened during the last few days was straight forward anyway.
They both sat in silence for a few moments, each lost in their own jumbled thoughts.
Matt couldn't help but think about the fact he'd done the same thing his mother had to conceive a child. How could he have been so stupid and stubborn back then? He'd treated her like an outcast without taking the time to see it through her eyes.
"Well, you know what would be great?” Alana broke the silence.
"What?"
"If we just drove around for the next few months. We can keep our eyes open to the towns and suburbs we pass by to see if we can find the perfect place for us,” she suggested happily. “We've still got quite a while before the baby's born. I'm up for an adventure. What about you?"
His gaze found hers. The smile on her pretty face was so wide she was beaming. Or, maybe it was just being pregnant that made her skin buzz so much. Whatever was giving her that gorgeous glow, Matt just hoped she would hold onto it. It wasn't like the aura that surrounded her spirit; this was a very humanly glow. And if he had anything to do with it, it would become a permanent thing. He planned on taking care of her every step of the way. Not just for the child's sake, but because he loved her with a passion he'd never felt before.
"I think that sounds like a plan!"
"Great.” She leaned back and closed her eyes for a second.
"But before we go, Alana, there's somewhere I'd like to stop by first.” He turned the key in the ignition as she strapped the belt over her chest.
He did the same.
Her brown eyes sparkled as she said, “Sure.” And although she didn't say anything else, Matt knew Alana was more than aware of whom he intended to visit.
He reached for the gold chain and cross he'd placed around his neck as soon as he'd woken up. It was strange, but after all these years and all the anger he'd felt toward his mother, he'd never let go of the gold chain that belonged to his dead father.
It was time to close a chapter in his life that he'd left open for too long. If he could go to the cemetery to apologize and say goodbye to his mother, then Matt Jensen could look forward to a bright life with the two new sparks in it.
