  Outside

It was late afternoon, those days that the sky is orange and I always have a sense of fear inside my chest.

I did not know that my instinctive fear would have a justification so strong, able to change the lives of everyone.

That evening, everyone noticed a series of little lights streaking the sky, beautiful like shooting stars, only smaller and in large numbers, falling here and there, until it rained slowly over our homes, spilling an almost imperceptible sand, brownish, but with a more vivid tone that the land of the area.

At the time no one cared, I went home feeling that strange tightening in my gut, but only the next day would reveal the reason.

It was in the local news, a live broadcast from the nearest hospital from my home, showing an abnormal despair, queues and people shouting.

The staff seemed to try, anyway, to contain the cameras, not wanting to spread despair.

As I still had the odd sensation of the other day, I decided to walk some streets not so far and see what happened in the hospital.

When I rounded the corner of the place, I have seen some television vans and journalists gathering to talk to someone inside a approaching car.

It wasn't a car of a representative of the place, nor a politic person, but a family with a patient who needed help.

Opening space among journalists, a man and a woman who could be his wife, helped an elderly woman out of the back seat.

As soon as the sun lit them, I saw that she was weak, with dark spots on the skin, especially in the arm.

The next moment they were surrounded by microphones, cameras and people trying to break the news of what was happening to these people who were admitted to the emergency room with different symptoms of the best known diseases.

I stood there, far enough to hear the noise of mixed questions bothering who wanted and needed to go.

Suddenly, we hear a different sound, like fabric ripping and some liquid falling on the sidewalk.

Journalists were scattered, some screaming, but avoiding all approach.

The crowd parted and I felt my body cool with the horror of that scene:

The couple held the lady with effort as she threatened to faint, pale as snow.

In place of her left arm, there was only one red spot and the whole arm lying on the ground, surrounded by a blur of dark liquid.

I shuddered to see the tragedy of the arm that cut itself off, but the worst was when the hospital staff came from inside, rushing to help.

They were in strange clothes, too covered for normal conditions, as beekeepers or astronauts.

Half of the group took the lady and family with speed, but the other half was there to remove the fallen arm, but in a way that the press did not realize the truth.

They released a white cloth on the limb, involved it and brought in, but I realized that, before entering the hospital, the arm moved frantically, like a tied furious animal.

This scene was far from the gaze of the camera, but not from the eye itself.

I felt as if the world around me had become a little cooler, darker, hideous.

I made an internal prayer that my imagination was not correct about what I had seen.

But it was only the first horror to come upon us all ...

I pulled away from the madness, almost ran back home and, on the way, all people had an expression of wonder and worry, which ended up infecting even those who did not know anything.

I got home and turned on the TV to see if they had more information, or if they had seen what I saw.

I took my cell phone in my hands and I saw five missed calls, with a co-worker of the electronics store.

I was still new there and this guy helped me get the hang of things.

He left a sinister voice message on my phone:

"Mr. Almeida will not open the shop today, he went to the intensive care this morning ... Something made a strong infection in his head ... No one knows if he'll survive ...".
