by Lisa Sommers

“I’ll rest easier when I see her.”

  “Mr. Moon . . .”

Derek interrupts her ranting. “Nurse, it’s ok. Summer is my sister and I’m sure she is going just as crazy about needing to see him.”

Chelsea enters the room. “She is,” Thank God she is here. I bet she is the reason for Derek’s one-eighty. “She’s insisting on seeing him as well. Is there any way they can share a room?” She suggests.

The nurse huffs and puffs. “I will see what I can do.”

  “Thank you,” I tell her.

“Listen, young man, if all it takes is that pretty little lady in the other room to keep your blood pressure steady then I will make it happen.” Thank God. “I’ll be back.”

I lay my head back and wait for my girl.

  Chapter 24

  Summer

“Now, you two behave yourself.” The nurse says before walking out the door.

My bed is a few feet away from Cal’s bed yet, it feels like it is miles apart. All of our friends and family left for the evening so it’s just Cal and I. My parents even flew in. They are all staying with Derek and Chelsea. That poor girl. I feel so bad for her. She has put up with so much stuff. The last thing she needs is my father preaching his words of wisdom down her throat.

I turn my head to look at the man that I have fallen so deeply in love with. He has yet to take his eyes off of me since they wheeled me into his room.

“What are you thinking?” I whisper.

A smile spreads across his handsome face. He reaches his arm and grabs a hold of the railing on the side of my bed and tugs on it.

  “What are you doing?”

“You’re too far away from me.” I couldn’t agree more.

“Is this spot still available for me?” I pat the empty space next to him.

“It’s been waiting for you for far too long.”

Cal lifts the starchy bedsheet so that I can slide right in next to him.

I lift my head so Cal can slide an arm under my neck. Once I am snuggled in close, he wraps his other arm around me. “Do you remember when I told you I could get used to having you next to me in my bed more often?” He asks.

“I do,” we were laying in his bed when he told me.

“I meant it. From this moment on, I don’t ever want to wake up without you by my side.”

I close my eyes as he pulls me in close. “I want the same thing.” I whisper as I pull his earlobe gently between my teeth. “Cal . . .”

“Baby, don’t tempt me,” he warns.

I would never do anything to jeopardize my baby’s health. I passed out earlier from not eating. I specifically asked the doctor if it is ok for Cal to continue with our healthy sex drive. He agreed that everything is fine, but that it all depends on how Cal is healing. “How’s your head?” I breathe against his neck.

He growls his answer. His hand roams my back until it lands on my ass.

“I take it you’re feeling a little better?”

“Mhm,” his lips trail down my cheek and don’t stop until they land on my collarbone. He nibbles lightly as his other hand grabs the back of my hair. He tugs until he has full access to my neck. “Summer,” I love hearing him say my name. “Your brother told me something.” He hesitates before continuing. Why would he want to talk about Derek right now? “He mentioned that you, uh, have some feelings for me.”

My brother is always butting into my business. I know exactly what Cal is talking about. “Yeah, what did he say?” I pull back to gage his expression.

“That you like me.” Really? My brother said, I like Cal?

  “Is that all he said?”

  He shakes his head no.

“I see,” I should put him out of his misery.

  “He said . . .”

I cut him off. “I love you, Cal.” I look at him to see if that is what he was getting at. Yeah, it definitely was.

“I’m glad,” he tucks a few strands of hair behind my ear.

  “Yeah?”

“Yeah,” Cal kisses my forehead. “I love you,” he breathes against my skin. “And I love this.”

He touches my belly. I look up at him. I can feel the love in his touch and I can see the passion in his eyes.

“It’s always been you.” He simply says. “Please say you won’t ever let me go.”

“Baby, it wasn’t this little peanut that made me fall for you.” I point to my stomach. “I honestly don’t know when it happened, but I did. I fell hard. I can’t imagine not waking up next to you.”

Cal slides his arm out from under my neck and places his hands on either side of my face. He gazes intently between my eyes and my mouth. “Will you marry me?” Whoa, wait. What? “Trust me, I know we have done everything completely backwards. Hell, we haven’t even gone out on a date yet.” I giggle at his comment. “But, I will tell you right now. The only other person in my heart is right here between us.

His comment makes me tear up. “Our baby,” I cry.

“Yes, our baby. I’ll admit, I’m scared to death about becoming a father but I know damn well that I could never do it without you. I want you there by my side for the rest of my life.”

His words are scary. His words are honest. His words are exactly what I want to hear.

  “Yes,” I simply say.

He frantically searches my face. “Yes?”

  I nod my head. “Yes.”

Cal brings his lips down to mine. “You won’t regret this.” He tells me. “I will do whatever it takes to make you both happy.”

“Baby, I know you will and I will try to make you happy.”

  “You already have.”

I snake my hands around his chest until I come to the opening on the back of his hospital gown. I pull it apart and glide my nails up and down his back. “Make love to me,” As much as I wish we weren’t in this hospital, I don’t want to wait until we are home.

  “Here?”

“Please,” I bat my eyelashes. “I want you.” I see the fire ignite in his eyes.

  “God, I love you.”

  “Show me.”

“For the rest of my life.” His words seal our fate. If we can get through the last forty-eight hours, then we can get through anything.

  Game on . . .

  Epilogue

  Cal

The crowd is going wild. The San Diego Sun Devils just won the World Series Championship. Ten innings in we end it with a memorable eight to seven.

“Way to go, Coach.” Bob comes up behind me. “You did it again.”

“Have you seen Summer?” I just finished up with a few local news networks to recap the game, but I can’t celebrate this moment without her by my side.

“She’s coming down with Judith as we speak.”

“Good,” as if this day can’t get any better, I have something else that will top it.

“Don’t worry,” she has no clue.

I nod my head in acceptance. Luckily, the guys have agreed to share this day with another special request.

“Do you want me to move the guys into the media room?”

  “Yeah, do you mind?”

  “Not at all.”

I go to my office and slide open the drawer that holds the diamond ring that I plan on giving Summer in about fifteen minutes. I open the small white box and pull out the ring. I stare at it for a few moments before replacing it back in the box.

I hear Summer call my name as she enters the locker room. Tucking the ring in the front pocket of my slacks, I make my way out to meet her.

She looks as beautiful as ever. I immediately envelope her in a tight embrace. “Hi baby,” I nuzzle my lips into the crook of her neck.

“Hi,” she giggles. “Congratulations,” her enthusiasm for the game makes this all worthwhile.

“I couldn’t have done it without you,”

“I had nothing to do with this. I can’t help that you have the best players in the league.”

  “I beg to differ.”

&nbs
p; “Mhm,” Judith clears her throat. She knows what I have planned. “Um, so I have something I want to show the both of you.”

Summer pulls back from my embrace. “You do?” She questions her.

“I do. It’s in the media room. I’ll make it quick so we can go celebrate the win at Shane and Alli’s house.”

Summer and I walk behind Judith and as she opens the door she slips inside and quickly blends in with the team.

The room is crowded but they manage to make a path for Summer and I to walk down. “What’s all this?” Summer questions.

Once we get to the middle of the room I drop to one knee. I know I asked her to marry me in the hospital but it hasn’t been brought up since. It’s nearly all that’s been on my mind. “Baby,” I reach for one hand as her other one goes to cover her mouth. “I know we seem to do things a little unconventional,” the crowd starts laughing. “But there is at least one thing that I want to do traditionally.”

She looks around the room and her eyes land on her best friends. Alli, Chelsea, Kelly and Sonny all join her at her side.

“Summer, you have become more to me than anything that I could ever have dreamed of. You reflect everything positive in my life,” her hand is shaking so bad so I rub the pad of my thumb over her knuckles to calm her. “And you mean more to me than I ever thought I could care about someone. I will always have your back and I will make sure that nothing ever happens to you and our baby.” I bow my head for just a moment.

  “Cal,” she whispers.

I look her straight in the eyes and tell her, “I’ve made mistakes in the past and I’m sure I’ll do it again . . .”

“I’m sure you will.” Someone from the room yells.

I cast an evil glare to the team before turning my gaze back onto Summer. Her beauty instantly makes my heart soft. Her soft eyes catch mine and the rest of the room seems to dissipate. No one else matters but her. “Listen, I know I don’t deserve you but I do know one thing for sure. I love you and our baby more than anything in this world.” I stand up so that I can see her face to face. I reach down into my front pocket and pull out the ring box. As I open it in front of her, I ask, “Will you marry me?”

Tears fill her beautiful eyes as she nods her head excitedly. She pulls her other hand away from her mouth and manages to choke out, “Yes.”

I pull her into my arms, snuggle in close and rock her from side to side. “Thank you,” I whisper into her ear. “I promise I will never let you down.”

“You better not,” Derek comes over and slaps me on the back. I’m sure this is hard on him but he says he has come to terms with our relationship.

“You have my word,” I express to him.

For the second time today, the crowd goes wild.

I just realized something and I have a feeling that Summer is going to fight me on this, but there is no way she is not taking my last name. “Baby, do you realize what your full name will be once we get married?”

She looks puzzled for a moment before she finally gets it. “Oh, hell no.”

  “Babe . . .” I warn her.

“Cal! Summer Moon? Really? Are we going to name our daughter Full Moon or Half Moon?” Her joke turns into a full-blown panic attack.

“What did you just say?” The shock in my voice appears to calm her down.

Summer reaches out and lays her soft cool hands on either side of my face. Her smile is radiant. “Surprise, it’s a girl.” She whispers.

I don’t know whether to be happy or scared. I guess I am a whole lot of both. “A girl?”

  She nods her head yes.

As I pull her in close, I wrap my arms around her. Looking towards the guys, I warn them all. “Don’t any of you even think about letting your boys around my little girl. You will all be fired.” How the hell will I survive raising a girl?

Summer whispers in my ear, “It’ll be ok. You’ll be a wonderful father.”

  Game on . . .
