  “We’ll talk about that later,” the white-haired lawyer said rather gruffly as he embraced Kate gently.

  Kate sighed. She’d come to rely so much on Sterling’s crusty but unfailing support; she truly didn’t know what she would have done without him. The Fortunes needed his wise counsel if they were to survive this debacle.

  And they had to survive. She would not let it be otherwise. And whatever Fate had brought them to this pass would soon learn that Kate Fortune wasn’t down yet.

  The Fortunes, she thought determinedly, were not fate’s children, but her children. And she would see them through.
